Notebook
*Happy Fourth of July! I’ll have a super-sized version of the notebook tomorrow catching up on everything from the last two days.
*The 2013 PGCBL season is one month old. The season began over four weeks ago on Wednesday, June 5. As of today, there are just 28 days remaining. The 2013 PGCBL playoffs are scheduled to commence on August 2.
*One quick note. The league-record hitting streak of Amsterdam’s Ed Charlton (NJIT) is safe, for now. Charlton set a PGCBL record with a 26-game hit streak last season. Both Cooperstown’s Nate Lotze (Kenyon) and Utica’s Michael Pierson (Appalachian State) had 17-game hitting streaks end on Wednesday night against the Elmira Pioneers and Watertown Rams respectively.
Did you know? One fact about a random PGCBL player each day…
*Adirondack’s Anthony Beasley (Louisburg) is the son of Tony Beasley, head coach of the Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The elder Beasley was a 19th-round selection of the Baltimore Orioles in the 1989 Major League draft and he went on to play professionally for nine years. Tony Beasley began his coaching career in 1999 in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system. He managed three different Pittsburgh affiliates to four playoff appearances between 2001 and 2005. Beasley made his Major League coaching debut in 2006 as a third base coach with the Washington Nationals. He returned to the Bucs in 2007 as a Minor League Infield Coordinator and then joined the Pirates’ staff in 2008 as a third base coach. Beasley remained with the Bucs through 2010 and then re-signed the Nationals organization as a manager at Double-A Harrisburg. Tony is in his second season as the manager of Washington’s AAA affiliate.
Quick hits on tonight’s games..
*There is just one league game on the schedule tonight, a Fourth of July meeting between the Utica Brewers and the Newark Pilots at Colburn Park. Both teams come into tonight’s game off of victories – Newark ended a six-game skid with a 4-2 win over Albany on Wednesday night while Utica ended Watertown’s seven-game winning streak with a 4-3 decision at Donovan Stadium. The season series between the two teams is tied at one win apiece, both have won at home. Utica earned an 8-5 home decision over Newark on June 14; the following night, Newark edged Utica, 6-4, at Colburn Park. Heading into tonight's game, the Brewers sit in second place in the PGCBL West and lead the fourth-place Pilots by 2.5 games, however Utica has played five fewer games . Keith Strickland’s Brewers are 3-7 away from home this season; Mike Armstrong’s Pilots are 5-5 at Colburn Park.
