2013 Brewer Mike McClellan Named Josh Willingham Award SemifinalistOmaha, Neb. – Columbus State University baseball player Mike McClellan has been named a semifinalist for the annual Josh Willingham Award presented by College Baseball Lineup. The award honors the most valuable player in NCAA Division II college baseball. In addition to the on field play, the player must excel in the dugout, clubhouse and the practice field as well as lead his team to national championship caliber status. McClellan played a pivotal role in Columbus State's deep run into the postseason this season. After not beginning the season in the starting lineup, the sophomore busted onto the scene thanks to a walkoff single against UNC Pembroke in mid-February. McClellan never looked back from there as he ended the season hitting .373 with a team high 13 home runs. He currently ranks in the top-10 in the nation in homers. The McDonough native drove in 43 runs while having a team best on-base percentage (.495) and slugging percentage (.669). During the NCAA Southeast Regional, McClellan had his finest moment of the season. In the opening game of the tournament against 13th-ranked USC Aiken, McClellan hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Cougars to a 3-2 win. He finished the tournament with seven hits, three home runs, five runs scored and four walks. For his efforts, McClellan was named to the All-Southeast Region Tournament Team. The Josh Willingham Award is named after North Alabama All-American and current Major League Baseball player, Josh Willingham.
The winner of the 2014 Josh Willingham Award will be named on Monday, June 2 following the conclusion of the Division II College World Series in Cary, N.C.
