Last night’s games: Amsterdam 8 Utica 2 Both the Amsterdam Mohawks and Utica Brewers started the season 2-6. Since then, Amsterdam has won 16-of-17, while Utica has lost 16-of-17. On Saturday night the two teams faced off in Amsterdam, the Mohawks atop the East Division and the Brewers in the cellar of the West. Amsterdam emerged victorious, winning 8-2. Utica got on the board first, scoring a lone run in the top of the fourth inning. Zach Hardy singled home Hayden Kelly to make it a 1-0 game. In the home half of the inning, Mohawks left fielder Jake Salpietro hit his second home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field. The Brewers climbed within one in the top of the seventh inning on a Cedric Mullins RBI single to right field. But Amsterdam broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs to make it an 8-2 game. JaVon Shelby brought home the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. A Brendan Tracy RBI groundout scored another, but the big hit of the inning came on a Blake Logan three-run home run to left field, his first of the summer. Amsterdam starter Connor Johnstone allowed two runs (both earned) in 6.2 innings of work for the Mohawks. Johnstone struck out five and walked just two Brewers. Utica starter DeShaun Hewitt went 6.2 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) as he took the loss, his third of the season. Watertown 14 Glens Falls 5 The Watertown Rams offense erupted for 14 runs on Saturday night, the most runs the Rams have scored in a game all season. They beat the Glens Falls Golden Eagles, 14-5, at home and remain tied for first place in the West Division. Glens Falls scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI fielder’s choice. Watertown answered with six runs in the home half of the inning. Chris Gaetano delivered a sacrifice fly to get the scoring started in the inning. A Drew Hercik fielder’s choice scored another and the next batter, Jason Scholl, produced a 2-RBI single to right field. Scholl came around to score on a 2-RBI single by James Bonds, which concluded the scoring in the inning. The Golden Eagles scored four runs in the top of the fifth to pull within a run at 6-5. After Nick Bernardo tripled to right center and Danny Oliveri walked and stole second, JQ Folena drove them in with a single to left field. Brennan Price followed with a 2-RBI double to left center to make it 6-5. The score would remain 6-5 until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Rams offense erupted for eight runs. Shane Servoss singled home the first run of the inning, Matt Diorio walked with the bases loaded to bring home another, Joe Ogren hit his second double of the game, this one scoring two runs. After Gaetano walked, Dominic Lopez singled up the middle to score two runs. Hercik followed with an RBI single of his own. Dalton D’Spain allowed five runs (four earned) in six innings of work to pick up his third win of the season for Watertown. Williams Durruthy tossed 3.1 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) in his second loss of the season. Elmira 10 Albany 8 The Elmira Pioneers were able to hold off a late Albany rally and defeat the Dutchmen, 10-8 at Dunn Field. The win keeps the Pioneers tied for first place in the West Division with the Watertown Rams. Albany started the scoring in the first frame of the game. Will Miller singled home Sean Aspinall and the Dutchmen had an early 1-0 lead. Elmira tied the game in the home half of the inning on a TJ Dixon RBI groundout. The big inning for the Pioneers came in the bottom of the third when they scored six runs. Nick Walker walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run, Christian Santisteban followed with an RBI single, Taylor Hillson followed with one of his own. Taylor Skerpon hit a sacrifice fly and a Jason Patnick single scored two runs to conclude the scoring in the inning. The Pioneers scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 10-1 ballgame. Chris Kalousidian scored on a wild pitch, Santisteban drove in another run with a groundout, and Taylor Hillson hit his second RBI single of the game. Albany put together a fearless rally in the top of the ninth that came up just short. With two outs, an error allowed the first run in the inning to score. Dave Vaccaro walked with the bases loaded to score a run, Justin Brock followed with a bases loaded HBP, another error allowed a run to score and Sean Aspinall hit a 2-RBI single. The Dutchmen scored seven runs in the inning but a groundout ended the game and the Pioneers held on. Bryson Hough allowed just one run in seven strong innings of work for Elmira and picked up his third win of the season. The Bucknell right-hander struck out nine Dutchmen and did not walk a batter. Albany starter Spencer Hotaling pitched two innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) as he took the loss. Newark 13 Mohawk Valley 0 After being swept in a double-header at home on Independence Day, the Newark Pilots rebounded and blew out the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs, 13-0. The Pilots remain a game out of first in the West, while the DiamondDawgs now trail by two games in the East. The Pilots got on the board in the third on an RBI fielder’s choice. Newark then had their first of three, four-run innings in the bottom of the fourth. Wyatt Padgett and Zach Wall each had RBI singles and Samm Wiggins drove in two runs with a double. The second of the four-run innings came in the bottom of the sixth. Luis Silverio had an RBI single, Jack Gerstenmaier singled home two more and Braxton Wilkes hit an RBI double. The final four-run inning came in the bottom of the seventh when Wiggins hit an RBI triple, Austin Clock drove him in with a sacrifice fly, Wilkes walked with the bases loaded and a run scored on a wild pitch. Michael Springer was the latest Newark starter to have a dominant outing. Springer did not allow a run in 7.2 innings of work and allowed just two hits. He struck out five batters, walked three, and is now 3-0 on the season. Mohawk Valley starter Evan Davis lost his first game of the season, allowing seven runs (all earned) in five innings of work. Tonight’s games: Mohawk Valley at Adirondack 3:00 p.m. Some day baseball on Sunday. The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs will look to bounce back after losing 13-0 at the hands of the Newark Pilots last night. Adirondack was off on Saturday but the Trail Blazers have won 8-of-10 and are coming off a double-header sweep against Newark on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Utica at Watertown 5:00 p.m. For the third time this season the Utica Brewers will make the trip to Watertown. The Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds have not been kind to the Brewers through two trips, as the Rams have beaten them via walk-off on both occasions. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Newark at Elmira 5:05 p.m. In a game with divisional standings implications, the Newark Pilots will travel to Elmira to take on the Pioneers. With a win and a Watertown loss, the Pilots could take over a share of first place in the West. The Pioneers and Rams are currently tied for first with 15-11 records.
