Last night’s games: Amsterdam 5 Glens Falls 4 The Amsterdam Mohawks picked up a game in the East Division with a 5-4 victory over the Glens Falls Golden Eagles on Saturday. The Mohawks now lead the East by 4.5 games over the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs, while Glens Falls fell to 12-18. Glens Falls took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a John Lynn RBI double down the left field line and a Colton Montgomery 2-RBI single. Amsterdam got two runs back in the top of the third to make it 3-2. John Razzino hit an RBI single and Joe Purritano was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in another run. The Mohawks tied the game in the fourth on a Marcus Carson sacrifice fly. Thomas Kain hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to give Amsterdam a 4-3 lead. Glens Falls tied the game in the home half of the inning as JQ Folena scored while Ryan Dodge was in a rundown. The winning run came across in the top of the eighth inning as Kain tripled to center field and scored on an error by Glens Falls center fielder Danny Oliveri. Joe Randal and Thomas Hackimer tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to preserve the victory for Amsterdam. Mohawk reliever Daniel Castro got just one out, but it was enough for him to pick up his first win of the season. Glens Falls starter Jack Fowler allowed five runs (four earned) in eight innings of work in taking the loss. Adirondack 2 Utica 0 The Adirondack Trail Blazers used a strong start from Rollie Lacy to go on and defeat the Utica Brewers, 2-0. Adirondack is now 12-20 on the year, while Utica is 4-25. Adirondack took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on an error by Utica second baseman Reno Rankin. The Trail Blazers added a lone run in the top of the fifth on an Alex Tuccio RBI single. The two runs proved to be all that was needed for Lacy and Co. as the Trail Blazers shutout the Brewers. Lacy, the reigning PGCBL Pitcher of the Week co-winner, went six innings and struck out seven while allowing four hits. Reliever Franklin Miller tossed an inning of scoreless relief and Pat Geraghty threw two innings of scoreless ball to preserve the win and pick up his first save of the season. It was the second time this season that Adirondack has shutout an opponent, July 4 game two against Newark being the other. Both games were 2-0 scores and Lacy was the winning pitcher in both contests. DeShaun Hewitt pitched well in the loss. The Utica starter allowed just two runs (one earned) in six innings of work. Watertown 10 Elmira 4 In a battle between the first and second place teams in the West, the Watertown Rams prevailed victorious, beating the host Elmira Pioneers, 10-4. The Rams move to 18-13 on the year and are now tied with Newark for first place in the West. Elmira is 18-14 and is a half-game out. Watertown got on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the second on a Ben Wylly RBI double and a Robbie Alessandrine RBI groundout. Elmira scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Derek Deler hit an RBI single, Christian Santisteban hit a 2-RBI single and third run came around to score on an error on the play. Matt Diorio hit his third home run of the season to cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth, making it a 4-3 game. Watertown tied the game at four in the top of the sixth on an Alessandrine RBI single. That was the first of five runs in the inning for the visitors. Santino Alteri brought in a run with an RBI single and Diorio cleared the bases with a 2-RBI single, with an additional run scoring on an error, to make it 8-4. Willi Martin had an RBI groundout in the top of the eighth to make it 9-4 and Josh Hassell hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth to score the final run of the game. Anthony Magovney picked up his first win of the season for Watertown, going five innings and allowing the four runs (three earned). The bullpen combination of Kyle Simmons, Jake Sale and Jon Escobar tossed four innings of scoreless relief and allowed just two hits in the process. Sam Sinnen took the loss for Elmira, hurling 5.2 innings and allowing eight runs (six earned). Newark 7 Mohawk Valley 3 The Newark Pilots claimed a share of first place in the West Division with a 7-3 win in Little Falls. The Pilots are now 18-13 on the season, while Mohawk Valley falls to 17-11. The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Derek Reed hit an RBI double for Newark. Mohawk Valley one-upped the Pilots in the home half of the inning, scoring two runs on a Jayson Sullivan RBI single and a Greg Fazio RBI triple. Newark took the lead for good in the top of the sixth on a Jack Gerstenmaier two-run home run, his first long ball of the season. Logan Boyher added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 4-2 Newark. The Pilots extended their lead to 7-2 in the top of the seventh on a Mohawk Valley error and a Tanner Giesel 2-RBI double. Giesel leads Newark with 22 RBIs on the season. Gus Craig hit his third home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough as Newark won the game by a score of 7-3. Jayson Yano moved to 5-1 on the season, throwing five innings and allowing two runs (both earned) while striking out seven. Nick Petrella allowed seven runs (four earned) in 6.2 innings in the loss for Mohawk Valley. Tonight’s games: Elmira at Albany 5:05 p.m. For just the fourth time this season, the Elmira Pioneers and Albany Dutchmen will meet, this time at Bob Bellizzi Field in Albany. Elmira leads the season series 2-1. The Pioneers are coming off a 10-4 loss that dropped them out of first place in the West. Albany was off on Saturday, but is coming off a split of a modified doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Glens Falls at Adirondack 6:05 p.m. In a battle of fourth place teams, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles will travel to Boonville to take on the Adirondack Trail Blazers. Adirondack is coming off a 2-0 win at Utica, while Glens Falls lost to Amsterdam, 5-4, at home on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Mohawk Valley at Amsterdam 6:35 p.m. In a clash between the top two teams in the East, the Amsterdam Mohawks will host the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs at Shuttleworth Park. The Mohawks have won 11-of-12, while the DiamondDawgs have lost 5-of-7. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Watertown at Utica 7:00 p.m. The Watertown Rams retook a share of first place in the West Division with a 10-4 win at Elmira on Saturday. The Rams are now tied with the Newark Pilots with an 18-13 record. Utica was shutout by Adirondack, 2-0, at home a night ago.
