Mohawks sweep Mohawk Valley

Filed by the Amsterdam Mohawks:

The Amsterdam Mohawks took both games in a doubleheader against the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs. Both games were decided by a score of 4-2. John Razzino (Franklin Piercce) homered in the first game for the Mohawks, and Tommy Kain (Lynn) hit a go-ahead two-run homerun in the second game.

Game 1

The Mohawks won the first game of the doubleheader 4-2. Tommy Kain and Alex DeBellis (Lynn) each had an RBI double to make an impact for the Mohawks.

John Razzino gave the Mohawks a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with an opposite field homerun.

The Diamond Dawgs responded with two runs in the top of the third inning. The Diamond Dawgs played some small ball and did a “hit and run” to move Greg Fazio (Rider) over to third on a Trey Stover (Hartfrod) single. Fazio would score on a wild pitch. Zach Collett (New Haven) then singled Stover home to give Mohawk Valley a 2-1 lead.

Tommy Kain tied the game for the Mohawks with an RBI double in the fifth inning that scored Josh Gardiner (Radford).

The Mohawks would tack on two more in the sixth inning on a Joe Purritano (Dartmouth) sacrifice fly. Alex DeBellis drove in Tommy Kain with an RBI double to make the game 4-2. That would be all for the scoring.

Ryan Clark (UNC-Greensboro)earned the win for the Mohawks, and Nick Petrella (Skidmore)took the loss for the Diamond Dawgs.

Game 2

In an absolute thriller, the Amsterdam Mohawks came from behind to beat the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs by a score of 4-2 in game two of the doubleheader. After not being able to hit Evan Kissinger (LSU-Eunice) well all night, the Mohawks exploded for four runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Tommy Kain went 2-3 with two RBI and a clutch homerun to give the Mohawks the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning. E.J. Ashworth (Fairfield) started out shakily for the Mohawks by giving up two runs in the first inning. He persevered through five innings of work and struckout eight batters.

Colin Hawk (Cincinatti) started things off for the Diamond Dawgs with a homerun to left field to give the Diamond Dawgs a 1-0 lead. Jayson Sullivan (Sacred Heart) also doubled in the inning to bring in Gus Craig (Columbia). The Diamond Dawgs lead 2-0 after the first, but would fail to plate another runner the rest of the game.

The game remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. The Mohawks had trouble all night trying to hit Mohawk Valley’s version of Amsterdam’s Thomas Hackimer (LSU-Eunice), Evan Kissinger. Kissinger, the submarine pitcher, had only allowed three hits and no runs through five, while striking out three batters. Everything unraveled for Mohawk Valley in the sixth. Marcus Carson (Kentucky) led off the inning with a single. Jake Salpietro (Fairfield) flied out, but Josh Gardiner followed that with a double down the left-field line to move Carson to third. John Razzino grounded a ball towards second, and Carson scored from third. Brendan Tracy (Fairfield) then crushed a ball off the wall in left-center field to tie the game at 2-2. After the tying double, Tommy Kain hammered a ball over the left field fence to give the Mohawks the lead for good.

Andy Ward (Florida State) finished the top of the sixth inning so he earned the win. Zach Breen (Barton) closed the game out for Amsterdam and earned his fifth save of the year. Kissinger took his second loss of the season.

Amsterdam will play Glens Falls in Glens Falls on Sunday. Mohawk Valley will travel to Utica to take on the Brewers.
