Last night’s games: Newark 12 Watertown 3 The Newark Pilots took over first place in the West Division with a 12-3 win over the Watertown Rams in Watertown. The Pilots are now 22-17 on the season and are up a half game over the 21-17 Rams and Elmira Pioneers. Newark hit back-to-back-to-back two-out singles in the top of the first inning, Austin Clock’s being the third and an RBI single to center. The Pilots added another run in the second on a Tommy Wagner RBI single. Newark scored three more runs in the third inning to push its lead to 5-0. A throwing error allowed one run to score and Zach Wall brought home the other two with an RBI double to left field. Watertown’s Chris Gaetano singled through the right side to bring in the Rams first run of the night in the fourth. A Tanner Giesel RBI double in the sixth made it 6-1. Watertown pulled within three runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring runs on a bases loaded hit by pitch and a Drew Hercik RBI fielder’s choice. Newark responded with four runs in the top of the seventh, two coming on a Tommy Wagner RBI single and the other two coming on a Samm Wiggins RBI double. The Pilots extended their lead to 12-3 in the eighth. Wagner again hit an RBI single and Luis SIlverio brought in the second run with an RBI groundout to short. Tanner Giesel finished 5-for-6 on the night. Giesel’s five hits ties Trey Stover’s (Mohawk Valley) five-hit game against Glens Falls on June 23 for the most in a single game this season. Two of Giesel’s hits were doubles and he leads the PGCBL with 13 two-baggers. Cam Scalazo improved to 2-0 on the season, going 5.1 innings and allowing the three runs (all earned) on three hits and striking out four. Corbin Powers went five innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits in taking the loss. Mohawk Valley 12 Albany 5 The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs scored multiple runs in four different innngs to defeat the Albany Dutchmen, 12-5. The DiamondDawgs are now 22-15 on the season and are five games ahead of the 18-21 Dutchmen for the #2 spot in the East. The DiamondDawgs got on the board in the first to take a 3-0 lead. Zach Collett drove in the first run with an RBI single. An error and a wild pitch allowed the other two runs in the inning to score. Colin Hawk extended the lead to 5-0 in the second with a 2-RBI single, scoring Joey Carcone and Andy Lalonde. Albany responded with two runs in the top of the third to make it 5-2. Danny Hrbek led off the inning with a solo home run and Sean Aspinall hit an RBI single that scored Ernie Clement. The Dutchmen rallied to tie the game at five in the fifth. Clement scored on a passed ball and Justin Brock hit an RBI single that scored Cameron Miller. After blowing a 5-0 lead, Mohawk Valley scored four runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a 12-5 lead, what wound up being the final score. In the seventh, Jayson Sullivan hit an RBI double that scored Eric Strano, Mike Triller hit a 2-RBI single, and Gus Craig hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Triller for the final run of the inning. In the eighth, a wild pitch scored Greg Fazio and Triller added another RBI single, this one scoring Carcone. Evan Kissinger tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory for Mohawk Valley, his first win of the season. Dylan McGee allowed four runs (all earned) in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss. Elmira 11 Utica 2 The Elmira Pioneers used one fewer pitchers than they scored runs en route to an 11-2 win over the Utica Brewers in Elmira. The Pioneers are now tied for second place in the West with a 21-17 record. Utica’s two-game winning streak was snapped, as they fell to 7-30 on the summer. Elmira scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead. Drew Fisher drove in the first run with an RBI single, Taylor Hillson walked with the bases loaded to bring in the second and Chris Kalousidian had a rare sacrifice fly, one that brought in two runs. Utica got one run back in the top of the third on a Zachary Torriente RBI single. Christian Santisteban and Jason Patnick each drew bases loaded walks in the fourth and Kalousidian scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1. The Pioneers scored lone runs in the fifth through eighth innings to account for the remaining four runs. Nick Walker scored on a passed ball in the fifth, Zac Bellinger hit an RBI double in the sixth, Taylor Hillson scored on a wild pitch in the seventh and an error allowed the final run to score in the eighth. Utica scored its second run of the game in the top of the eighth as Reno Rankin scored on a passed ball. Roberto Suppa picked up his third win of the season with a scoreless second inning. The ten Elmira pitchers held Utica to five hits and struck out twelve. Krystien Battilana allowed seven runs (five earned) in 3.2 innings as he took the loss. Tonight’s games: Mohawk Valley at Glens Falls DH: 5:00 p.m. After having last night off, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles will host the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs for a doubleheader at East Field. Mohawk Valley is coming off a 12-5 over Albany. The Golden Eagles are looking to sneak in to the postseason, currently trailing Albany by a game and a half for the third seed in the East. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Watertown at Newark DH: 5:05 p.m. A night after Newark beat Watertown 12-3 in Watertown, the Pilots will host the Rams for a doubleheader at Colburn Park. Newark leads Watertown and Elmira by a half-game in the West. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. Utica at Amsterdam 6:35 p.m. With both teams coming off having winning streaks snapped, Amsterdam’s of eight games and Utica’s of two games, the Brewers and Mohawks will face off in Amsterdam for a cross-division clash. Amsterdam has clinched a playoff spot, but is looking to clinch the division in the coming days. First pitch at Shuttleworth Park is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Adirondack at Elmira 7:05 p.m. The Adirondack Trail Blazers will look to continue to chip away at a playoff spot, with a big matchup against the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday night. The Pioneers are coming off an 11-2 win over Utica a night ago, while Adirondack was off.
