Mohawks defeat Adirondack in game one, game two postponedFiled by the Amsterdam Mohawks:
The Amsterdam Mohawks defeated the Adirondack Trailblazers by a score of 6-4 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game of the doubleheader got as far as the bottom of the second inning before it was called off due to rain. Josh Gardiner (Radford) and Zack Brown (Kentucky) led the way to victory for the Mohawks.
Josh Gardiner inched closer to Vince Riggi on Amsterdam’s career hit list, with hits number 100 and 101. Gardiner went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Zack Brown was solid on the mound for the Mohawks. Brown struck out nine over six innings, and only allowed three runs on five hits.
Adirondack took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After Alex Tuccio (Siena) singled and R.J. Devish (Rutgers) walked, Brad Jones (Florida Tech) doubled to left center. Devish and Tuccio came around to score to put the Blazers ahead.
Amsterdam responded by putting up three runs in the bottom of the inning. Josh Gardiner got things started with a bases-loaded two-RBI single that scored Brendan Tracy (Fairfield) and Jonathan Pryor (Wake Forest). John Razzino (Franklin Pierce) followed Gardiner with an RBI-single to give the Mohawks a 3-2 lead.
The Trailblazers tied the game at three in the top of the third inning. With runners on first and third, Alex Tuccio grounded into a fielder’s choice, but was able to score Mike Carter (Rutgers) from third on the play.
The Mohawks took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. John Razzino led the inning off with a single, and immediately scored when Tommy Kain (Lynn) doubled him in. Alex DeBellis (Lynn) singled to move Kain over to third, and then Brendan Tracy followed that with a single to score Kain. Jonathan Pryor later brought Debellis in with a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-3.
John McCarren (Wake Forest) came on for the seventh inning to earn the save for the Mohawks. Although he let up a home run to Brad Jones to make the score 6-4, he was able to shut the door and win the game for Amsterdam.
Zack Brown picked up the win and improved his record to 3-2. Brian Sondergard (NJIT) picked up the loss for the Trailblazers. John McCarren earned his second save of the season.
The Mohawks will host the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs in the penultimate game of the season on Tuesday. The Trailblazers will travel to Elmira. |
