2015 Mohawk named MAAC Pitcher of the Week

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The league office rewarded Fairfield pitcher Mike Wallace after the junior threw one of the best pitching gems in recent years against Manhattan. Wallace was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week after tossing a nine-inning complete game two-hit shutout for the first conference win of the season. Wallace became the first Fairfield pitcher to throw nine innings and allow no runs with two or fewer hits since Rob Gariano accomplished the feat against Saint Peter’s in 2009.

“It’s a great tribute to Wally,” Head Coach Bill Currier said. “He certainly overcame a tough day to pitch, and threw the ball at three different speeds at good locations and really dominated the game. It’s a great tribute to Mike and congratulations.”

The junior stopped the team's two game losing streak and tossed a complete game two-hit shutout while striking out seven and walking two. Wallace set team season-highs in almost every pitching category including innings, strikeouts, and hits allowed. Wallace allowed just two singles, one off of his glove, on a windy day with temperatures hitting 39 degrees.  At one point in the game Wallace retired 10-straight batters and would only face three batters over the minimum.

It is the first weekly award for the Stags this season and the first for Wallace in his career. Wallace is one of just five MAAC pitchers this season to throw a complete game of any kind. Fairfield is back in action on Wednesday as they travel to America East leader Hartford for a 3pm contest.
