Brewers drop two games to Trail Blazers

UTICA, NY – After beginning the week on a three-game win streak on the road, the Utica Brewers baseball team came back home Friday (6/19) to Donovan stadium and lost two games to the Adirondack Trail Blazers 9-5 and 6-0.

The first game Utica played against the Trail Blazers was a continuation from Tuesday, June 9th when both teams were rained out. The closest the Brewers got was 7-5 in the fifth inning when Nick McIntee (Wayne State College) drove in Dominick Bregar (Colorado State University – Pueblo) on a sacrifice fly and Ismael Herrera (Norfolk State) singled home Aaron Smith (Wake Forest). Both Bregar and Smith reached base via a single and finished the game 2-for-4 and 1-for-5 respectively.

From there, Adirondack scored two more runs in the final four innings with Ryan Aquino (Pace University) of Adirondack and Patrick Bellinger (Tiffin University) of Utica throwing well in relief. Aquino threw 4 1/3 and allowed no runs off of four hits. As for Bellinger, the sophomore went 4 1/3 as well, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.

Game two saw the Trail Blazers solid pitching continue with starter Zach Crim (Chestnut Hill College) hold a perfect game into the sixth inning. A walk by Brewers Dan Vucovich (Holy Cross) to lead off the sixth ended the bid, but Crim kept a no hitter intact through 7 2/3rd until Tadarious Hawkins (Henderson State) singled to left field after an error would’ve ended the inning for Crim. Crim finished with eight innings pitched, not allowing a single run to score, striking out eight Brewers.

With Utica’s offense kept in check, Adirondack scored runs in the five of the nine innings played on eight hits. Accumulating RBI’s were Mike Flax (La Salle University), Ryan Paige (Mansfield University), Hunter Thomas (Jefferson Community College) and Brendan Looby (Chestnut Hill College). Flax and Paige both had two runs batted in, while Thomas and Looby had one.

Up next for the Brewers is Mohawk Valley. Utica will travel to play the Diamond Dawgs on Saturday (6/20). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
