Last Night’s Game:
Mohawk Valley 8 Victor 5: The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs are a win away from their first PGCBL championship after beating the Victor RailRiders, 8-5, in Game One of the PGCBL Championship Series Wednesday night in Victor.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when the DiamondDawgs took the lead for good with a five-run frame. A bases loaded walk, an RBI groundout, a passed ball, a Chris Rave RBI single and a wild pitch accounted for the five runs.
The RailRiders got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a Matt Brooks RBI single. An error in the fourth cut the lead to 5-2 as Victor scored another lone run and a Tommy Wagner RBI single in the sixth made it a 5-3 game. Sam Machonis responded for Mohawk Valley in the top of the seventh with an RBI double, but Victor cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning on an Evan Fernandez two-RBI double.
Not to be outdone, Thomas Walraven and Ryan Stekl each hit RBI doubles for the DiamondDawgs in the eighth to add two insurance runs for the visitors. Victor rallied to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Anthony Herrera—who got the win in Monday’s deciding third game against Amsterdam—struck Chris Intocaso out to end the game.
Payton Coddou tossed six innings for the DiamondDawgs while allowing three runs (two earned) in getting the win. Herrera was credited with the save. Victor starter Eoin McAvinchey allowed the first five Mohawk Valley runs (only one earned) in taking the loss.
