Pioneers Ink Three More for 2016 Season

Elmira, N.Y. – The Elmira Pioneers and Head Coach Matt Burch are pleased to announce the addition of three players to the roster for the upcoming 2016 PGCBL season. Siena College sophomore catcher Phil Madonna joins infielder Brian Kelly, and left-handed pitcher Tom Miller in having the opportunity to call Historic Dunn Field home this summer.

Madonna, who calls Gibsonia, Pa. home, is currently in his second season with the Saints. Last season he threw out 6-of-12 would-be base stealers and started 10 games, while appearing in 22 overall. Behind the plate, he committed only one error in 72 opportunities. Madonna finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs in a game against NYIT. Before Siena, he was the 2014 WPIAL Class A Player of the Year at the Vincentian Academy.

Head Coach Matt Burch said of Madonna, “Throughout my Pioneers career, I have had the opportunity to coach several very good catchers from Siena, and I know that Phil will follow suit. He has plenty of collegiate experience to handle a diverse pitching staff. We look forward to helping in Phil's development”.

Kelly hails from Demarest, N.J. and is in the midst of his freshman campaign with the Saints. So far he has appeared in eight games, starting five for Siena. The middle infielder turned first baseman was selected to play at the NJSBCA Senior All-Star Game. Before Siena, Kelly played at Northern Valley Regional, where he garnered First Team All-Conference honors as a senior.

“Brian will be a very versatile player for the Pioneers this summer. Fans can expect to see Brian play several defensive positions around the diamond, including pitcher. He is a commodity that we are fortunate to have signed for the upcoming summer. Siena Coach Tony Rossi and his staff continue to successfully develop their roster, and we are a fortunate benefactor of the hard work all parties contribute”, stated Head Coach Matt Burch.

Miller, who calls Castleton, N.Y. home, is also in the midst of his freshman season at Siena.

The 6’3” southpaw toed the mound for four years at Maple Hill High School. After his senior year, Miller was named to the NY Sportswriters Association All-State First Team. For the Saints this season, he has appeared in three games and made one start.

Head Coach Matt Burch when asked about Tom added, “He is a big, young left-hander that is looking to continue the Siena pitching reputation in Elmira. We are encouraged that Tommy gets the opportunity to compete this season with Kyano Cummings. Our hope is that he picks up some Knowledge from his senior mentor”.

The 2015 season had plenty of good moments for the Pioneers, including Collegiate Baseball best 23 straight home victories. The Pioneers followed up their strong play on the field to lead the PGCBL in attendance, averaging 3,000 fans per game. That tremendous turnout allowed the Pioneers to place second in overall average attendance of all Collegiate Baseball teams in the country.

The Elmira Pioneers will be hosting the second annual Hot Stove Dinner at the Hill Top Inn in Elmira, NY with special guest speaker, two-time World Series Champion, Jose Canseco. The event will be held on Thursday, April 21st and is presented by Hilliard and Elmira Business Institute.
