On Monday the Atlanta Braves acquired Mel Rojas Jr. from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations.

A fan favorite in Amsterdam, Rojas played for the Mohawks in 2009 and 2010. In 2009 Mel hit .314 with 3 home runs, 19 RBI and 8 stolen bases as the Mohawks finished the season 26-3 and won the NYCBL Championship.

In 2010 Rojas returned to the Mohawks. That year the season started on June 5th and Mel was drafted on June 8th by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 3rd round. Mel stayed in Amsterdam while the details of his contract were being worked out and he hit .298 with 11 stolen bases in 24 games before signing with the Pirates on July 14th.

This is Rojas’ seventh season of professional baseball and he is a .256 hitter in nearly 700 games played between the Single-A and Triple-A levels. This season Rojas started the season in Triple-A with the Indianapolis Indians and was hitting .154 through 14 games.

The Braves acquired Rojas on Monday and assigned him to their Double-A affiliate in Mississippi after placing outfielder Sean Godfrey on the disabled list. The move helps the Mississippi Braves fill the void left in the outfield by the loss of Godfrey and the organization hopes they can get Rojas back on track to his top prospect status from a couple seasons ago.
