Stags Shine for DiamondDawgs; Mohawk Valley disappoints Dutchmen

LITTLE FALLS, NY—The runs came in bunches Monday night between the Albany Dutchmen and the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs.

Unfortunately for the Dutchmen, Mohawk Valley’s bunch was just a little bit bigger and it came thanks to the “Fairfield Four”.

The Diamond Dawgs would put four runs up on the board with five straight baserunners, three of them from Fairfield University, and Mohawk Valley took over third place in the East, upending the Albany Dutchmen, 4-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mac Crispino (Avon, CT/Fairfield University) would hit the first of back-to-back doubles to break the scoreless tie, scoring Andrew Turner (King of Prussia, PA/Long Island University-Brooklyn) from first base. The second double would belong to Michael Conti (Glastonbury, CT/Fairfield University), as his double would score Crispino. An RBI single by Drew Arciuolo (Milford, CT/Fairfield University) that would score Conti chased reliever Michael Maul (Houston, TX/Trinity University) from the game after only four batters, as he would be replaced by Nate Harris (San Antonio, TX/Louisiana Tech University). The Diamond Dawgs would put one more on the board, as Michael Ketchmark (Dallas, TX/Dartmouth) hit a bloop single to left field that would score Sean Mazzio from first.

Albany would finally get on the board in the top of the eighth inning, as the Dutchmen would spray hits deep into the outfield. Jon Skidmore (Dallas, TX/Dallas Baptist University) would start it off by blasting a triple to deep right field. The multi-base hits would continue with the next batter, as Cole Malloy (Pasadena, CA/Butler University) would blast one to left that would score Skidmore. Malloy would score himself on an RBI single by JJ Shimko (Jacksonville, FL/University of South Carolina-Upstate), which would end the night for not only Diamond Dawgs starter Anthony Rupp (Staten Island, NY/LIU-Brooklyn), but reliever Jon Sell (Burnt Hills, NY/Herkimer CC) as well. Another run would come in for the Dutchmen in the inning, as Kyle Skeels (Langhorne, PA/Coastal Carolina University) would hit an RBI single that would score Shimko.

However, Zachary Vennaro (New Hartford, NY/Monroe CC) would make sure that that one run lead was safe, as in the top of the ninth, he would set the Dutchmen down in order to pick up the save for Mohawk Valley (11-10).

With the win, the Diamond Dawgs leapfrog Albany (11-11) for third place in the Eastern Division, firmly entrenching themselves in the Eastern Division playoff race.

Rupp, who pitched seven solid innings for Mohawk Valley, earned the win. Maul picked up the loss in relief.

The Diamond Dawgs finish up their two-game homestand Tuesday night as they play host to the Saugerties Stallions. The Dutchmen will return to Veteran’s Memorial Park in Little Falls on Friday, but on Tuesday will have an off day before heading back to Bob Bellizzi Field to face off against Eastern Division leader Amsterdam.
