Pioneers rank high in attendance numbers

The Elmira Pioneers are officially one of summer collegiate baseball’s best teams in terms of attendance.

In the recently released Ballpark Digest attendance rankings, the Pioneers were shown to have the third-highest average attendance and fourth-highest total attendance in all of summer collegiate baseball. This comes a year after the Pioneers were one of only two summer collegiate teams to finish in the top 100 of attendance in leagues below MLB.

During the 2016 summer, Elmira had an average of 3,384 people come to its games, trailing only two Northwoods League teams for top average attendance among summer collegiate teams. The total Pioneer attendance of 84,600 is the fourth-highest in summer collegiate baseball.

Not only did Elmira have success at the gate, but on the diamond as well. The Pioneers finished the regular season with a 33-15 record, won its second straight West Division title.

It’s not uncommon for Elmira to finish high in the rankings for attendance. Outside of the past two years' ranking, the Pioneers have had staggering numbers come through the turnstiles. In 2014 the Pioneers had the third-highest total attendance among summer collegiate teams with 75,861 people going to Dunn Field. Elmira was third in 2013 with 73,066 people and second in 2012 with an average of 3,022 people at Dunn.

Outside of Elmira, five other PGCBL teams finished in the top 100 of summer collegiate attendance with Oneonta at No. 44, Amsterdam at 68, Newark at No. 77, Mohawk Valley at 95 and Glens Falls at No. 97.

The PGCBL is affiliated with Perfect Game, the largest independent scouting service in the country. Last year, more than 1,400 professional players had either worn the uniform of a PGCBL team or participated in a Perfect Game event.
