DiamondDawgs, Trail Blazers Split Non-Traditional DoubleheaderLITTLE FALLS, N.Y. – The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs needed the sweep on Wednesday to keep pace with the Albany Dutchmen for the second spot in the Eastern Division. However, the Adirondack Trail Blazers made sure Mohawk Valley left the job only half-finished. The two teams would trade three-run home runs in a suspended Game One, but the Trail Blazers plated four in the third inning of Game Two to ensure the split, 9-8 and 3-6. When the game resumed, Adirondack would put Mohawk Valley pitcher Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, NY/Southern New Hampshire) into a bases loaded jam in the top of the third. Chuck Hooker (Warrington, PA/Alderson Broaddus) would make him pay with a 2-RBI shot to left field to tie up the score at three. The next batter, designated hitter Robert Zurawski (Detroit, MI/Hillsdale), would bring the rest of the Trail Blazers remaining on base with a 3-run home run over the left field wall to take the lead for Adirondack. Johnny Mayer (Suffolk, VA/Norfolk State) got the lead down to two after sneaking a ball past the Adirondack third baseman and into left field to score Lucas Terwilliger (Elmira, NY/Adelphi). Ben Porter (Newton, MA/Columbia) brought the lead down to one on an RBI single that brought home Nico Ramos (Holland Patent, NY/Siena). Dan Deely (Sonoma, CA/Sacramento State) tied up the score, albeit on a controversial single, that would score Mayer. Just like Zurawski in the top of the inning, Russ Olive (Chelmsford, MA/UMass Lowell planted a ball in the right-center field bleachers. An errant throw from Deely in the top of the fourth brought home another Trail Blazer, in the form of Riley Schaefer (Thorndale, TX/Texas Lutheran). Luckily for Mohawk Valley, DeSarro would force Justin Smith (Lititz, PA/Hofstra) to pop out to mitigate the damage to just one run. Tyler Bruno's (Poughkeepsie, NY/Iona) sacrifice fly scored Jordan Torrento (Warren, MI/Adrian) in the sixth to cut the DiamondDawgs' lead to just one. However, Mohawk Valley reliever Levi Abrahamson (Mountain Home, ID/Treasure Valley CC) was just brilliant for the DiamondDawgs, only allowing one baserunner to put an abridged Game One away for Mohawk Valley. DeSarro picked up his fifth win for the DiamondDawgs, while Jonathan Hardy (Clinton, NY/Mohawk Valley CC) was saddled with the loss for Adirondack. Abrahamson, with 3 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball, picked up the save. In Game 2, the Trail Blazers got on the board first on a Bay McIntosh (Orlando, FL/Florida Tech ) RBI double that scored Joe Simone (Wayne, NJ/Rider). In the top of the third, Adirondack hit Mohawk Valley starter Jonathan McKinney (Marietta, GA/Southern Union State CC) and hit him hard. The Trail Blazers scored four runs in the inning, and slammed balls all over Veteran's Memorial Park. Tim Zeng would end the scoreless streak with the back end of a trio of singles by himself, Alexis Monge-Rodriguez (Pembroke Pines, FL/Barry) and Ben Porter. His 2-RBI single scored Monge-Rodriguez and Engel. The Trail Blazers extended their lead back to four in the fourth on an RBI single by McIntosh. That hit through the first-second base gap would score Bruno. Olive hit his fourth RBI in the fifth, on a single that would bring Porter in from third. His 40th RBI of the season allowed the DiamondDawgs to cut the lead to three. Unfortunately for Mohawk Valley (27-16), that would be all they would get, as fog rolled in in the top of the seventh, making the field unplayable and ending the game prematurely. Zac Bygum (Castaic, CA/Dartmouth) picked up the win for the Trail Blazers (15-29), while McKinney was saddled with the loss.
Mohawk Valley has an off day on Friday before heading back to Veteran's Memorial Park on Saturday to face the Glens Falls Dragons. The Trail Blazers will head to Shuttleworth Park on Friday to face off with the Amsterdam Mohawks. |
