Dragons Avenge Loss With Late RunGlens Falls, NY- The Glens Falls Dragons and the Amsterdam Mohawks squared off for the second time in as many nights. After a 9-2 loss Glens Falls returned to the friendly confines of East Field looking to even the season series with the Mohawks. Three Mohawk hitters combined to hold Glens Falls hitless for seven innings, but the Dragons broke a 1-1 tie with a single run in the bottom of the eighth to pull out a 2-1 win. Amsterdam jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Richie Barrella (Manhattan) led off the inning with a single off of Glens Falls starter Julien Arcos (LIU-Post). Ben Rhodes then legged out an infield hit, as did Jackson Wenstrom (HVCC). Amsterdam starter Teddy Sabato (Manhattan) went three innings for the Mohawks without yielding a hit or an earned run. Brendan Coffey came in for Amsterdam in the bottom of the fourth and with two outs walked a pair of Dragons and hit a batter as still hitless Glens Falls had their best scoring opportunity of the night. Coffey however induced a fly ball out to end the threat. Brooks Knapek (UMASS) hit the bump for the Mohawks in the fifth, but the result remained the same. In two innings of work the sophomore southpaw struck out four of the seven batters he faced, walking one and keeping Glens Falls from picking up their first safety of the night. Glens Falls drew even in the bottom of the seventh, still without the benefit of a hit. Nick Kondo (UAlbany) Nate Cobb (Malone U.) reached on a fielder's choice as Kondo slid safely into second. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and Phoenix Hernandez (Southern New Hampshire) ground out to second allowing Kondo to score. In the eighth Nick DeBrino (Canisius), the fourth Amsterdam pitcher, walked a pair of Glens Falls batters with no one out. On Came Ryan Falls (Marshall) to try to thwart the rally. Justin Rouse (Bellarmine) however doubled down the third base line just inside the bag scoring Anthony Vaglica (LIU-Post) to give the Dragons the 2-1 lead. Heriberto Cassasola (Reinhardt) came on in the top of the ninth to save it for the Dragons. Shane Berringer (Siena) pitched scoreless innings for Glens Falls in the seventh and eighth to earn the win. He is now 1-0 on the season. DeBrino (0-1) took the loss. |
