PGCBL Playoff Roundup - First RoundAfter two months of regular season action, the PGCBL Playoffs have arrived. Tonight, three games will determine which teams join the Jamestown Jammers in the PGCBL Semifinals, which are scheduled to begin on Thursday night. East Division First Round One of the league's oldest and fiercest rivalries will be renewed in the postseason. The Amsterdam Mohawks, winners of the East Division, will take on the Albany Dutchmen. Amsterdam and Albany have met twice previously in the PGCBL Playoffs, with the Mohawks winning best-of-three series in the Division Finals in 2013 and 2016. Amsterdam has never exited the playoffs without a victory during the tenure of the PGCBL. During the regular season, the matchup was relatively even, with the Mohawks winning five games, and the Dutchmen winning four. The pitching matchup will see Amsterdam's Zane Stephens (Mississippi State) battle Albany's Deaven Phillips (Tampa). Central Division First Round The quest for a third PGCBL title in four seasons begins for the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs at home on Tuesday night. The first year Watertown Rapids will look to officially dethrone the defending champs after qualifying for the postseason on the final day of the regular season. The Central Division matchup pits the two best offenses in the league against one another, with both teams averaging more than 7.5 runs per game this season. A PGCBL team from Watertown has never won a PGCBL playoff game, losing all three of their games in 2013 and 2014. The Rapids won the regular season series against the Dawgs, taking six of the ten games. West Division First Round Wednesday's West Division showdown is a rematch of a first round contest from last season, when the Elmira Pioneers rode 15 hits to a 12-2 drubbing of the Geneva Red Wings at McDonough Park. The Pioneers have won in this round of the playoffs in four of the last five years, while the Red Wings have never won a PGCBL Playoff game. Despite making their sixth straight trip to the playoffs, the Pioneers are still in search of their first PGCBL title. Geneva has controlled the season series against the Pioneers, going 6-3 in the nine games during the regular season. The winner of this game in Geneva will head to Jamestown on Wednesday night for Game 1 of the PGCBL Semifinals. |
