ELMIRA — Just about everything is new for the 2013 version of the Elmira Pioneers as they head into their third year in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.
The Pioneers have new leadership in manager Matt Burch and coaches Brian Hill and Archie McNelis. Burch replaces Dan Schwam, who was let go after last season’s disappointing 17-29 finish.
No player from that team is back for this go-round.
The 2012 Pioneers led the PGCBL with 106 errors for a league-worst .944 fielding percentage. Elmira’s .250 team batting average was second from the bottom (Cooperstown hit .248), and its 4.90 ERA ranked sixth among the PGCBL’s nine teams.
Burch, Hill and McNelis have teamed up before with the Pioneers, leading the 2007 Elmira squad to the New York Collegiate Baseball League championship.
