Rams best Brewers in Duffy Dome Lid-Lifter

Filed by the Watertown Rams

WATERTOWN- Nik Alfonso’s (South Florida) bases clearing double in the bottom of the third wound up being the game-winning RBIs in Watertown’s (1-2) 6-1 win over Utica (0-3). Kevin Klaess (Cypress) hurled five scoreless innings to earn the win for the Rams. Hunter McIntosh (Alabama State) took the loss for the Brewers.

The teams were scoreless through two and a third until Watertown broke the game open with a six run third inning. The inning began with walks by Dominic Lopez (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), Jacob Boylan (Kansas), and Austin Lueck (South Florida). Following a strikeout by Tyler Decker (JCC), Alfonso stroked a three-run double into the left-centerfield game to score the aforementioned runners. The Rams tacked on three runs on RBI’s by Trevor Mario (VCU) and Bobby Indelgia (Holy Cross).

Michael McClellan (Georgia Southern) was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 for the Brewers. McClellan scored once and walked once to provide an offensive spark in the Brewers lineup.

The Brewers scored their lone run in the away half of the sixth inning following singles by McClellan and Ryan O’Neil (Florida International). McClellan was driven in by Brewers catcher Nathan Mann (Brown).

Rams starter Kevin Klaess tossed five scoreless to earn the victory for the Rams. Klaess finished with three strikeouts while only allowing two hits. Brewers starter Hunter McIntosh was relieved by head coach Keith Strickland following the three walks to begin the third inning. McIntosh wound up allowing three runs (all earned) in taking the loss.

A crowd of 858 saw the Rams win their regular season home opener. Watertown and Utica play again tomorrow night in Utica at Murnane Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM.
