A five run eighth inning gave the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs a 6-5 victory over the Adirondack Trail Blazers at the Smith Sports Complex in Boonville.
The DiamondDawgs(4-2) struck first in the first inning Casey Rodrigue (LSU Eunice) scored on a throwing error to make it 1-0. The Blazers evened the game in the third as the Dawgs attempted a 6-4-3 double play only to throw the ball away and score Mike Parsons (Rider).
Adirondack(2-3) took the lead in the fourth as Austin Hatfield (Memphis) reached on a fielder’s choice. Bobby Slagle (Villanova) singled to right which moved Hatfield over to third. Alex Simone (West Alabama) nailed a deep fly ball to center to score Hatfield on the sacrifice fly.
The Blazers tacked another run in the fifth as Tom Bouck (NJIT) hit a towering homerun over the right field wall making it a 3-1 Blazers lead.
The DiamondDawgs opened the flood gates in the eighth as Matt Zanotta (Bryant) was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Trey Hunt III (Point Loma Nazarene) singled and Sam Dexter (Southern Maine) walked. With a seamlessly harmless line drive straight to the right fielder, it looked like the Blazers would get out of a jam but instead it was misplayed and hit off the tip of his glove and Zanotta scored to tie the game at three apiece.
Then, Rodrigue advanced on a passed ball strike out which would score Dexter. To make it 4-3. Dalton Herrington (ULM) doubled down the right field line to score two more DiamondDawgs which made the score 6-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth.
The Blazers tacked on a run in their half of the inning as Tom Bouck singled. Riley Moonan (Farleigh Dickinson) pinch ran for Bouck. Shane Allen (Northeastern) doubled to left centerfield which put runners on second and third. The consecutive walks to Hatfield and Bobby Slagle would make the score 6-4.
Adirondack held the Dawgs scoreless in the top of the ninth. In the Blazers half of the inning, Mike Parsons reached on an error. Dominick Fazio’s (High Point) ground out to third moved Parsons to second. Brandon Jossey’s (Seton Hill) infield grounder was thrown over the first baseman’s head which eventually scored Parsons to make it 6-5 and that’s all the Blazers could put up in the ninth.
Mohawk Valley’s Tyler Bray (ULM) picked up the win while Patrick Michon (Texas A&M) earned the save. Chas Parsons (Mohawk Valley C.C.) was the hard luck loser for the Blazers. Adirondack plays at Amsterdam on Saturday and at Utica on Sunday before returning home on Tuesday to take on the Amsterdam Mohawks at 7pm.
