Brewers drop rain-shortened game to Rams

Filed by the Utica Brewers...

The Watertown Rams piled on five runs in the second, and then withstood a three-run Utica rally in the third as they rolled to a 9-4 victory in a rain-shortened six-inning contest at Murnane Field.

After a scoreless first, the Rams struck for for five runs on four hits in the second inning. The rally was  highlighted by a bases-clearing, three-RBI triple from Bobby Indeglia (Holy Cross). Joe Moroney (Kansas) drove in Watertown's fourth run with an RBI single. He stole second and moved to third on a Dominic Lopez (Texas A&M - Corpus Christi) base hit. Moroney capped off the five-run frame when he sprinted home on a wild pitch.

The Brewers trimmed Watertown's five-run lead to just two in the third inning. The Brewers banged out four hits in the frame. Matt Hendricks (Rollins) led off the third with a base hit and then scored from first on a double by Eric Garza (TCU 2013-14).  Jay Gonzalez (Auburn) singled Garza over to third and a two-out walk to Michael Pierson (Appalachian State) loaded the bases. Joe Gallub (Concordia) smashed Utica's fourth hit of the inning, a two-RBI single into center field that scored both Garza and Gonzalez. Watertown starter Joe Adel (South Florida) pitched out of trouble however as he induced Michael McClellan (Georgia Southern) to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Watertown pulled away with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Rams loaded the bases in the fourth on a Brad Rush (St. John Fisher) single, a walk to Bobby Indeglia and a Joe Moroney (Kansas) fielders' choice. Dominic Lopez (Texas A&M - Corpus Christi) worked a bases-loaded walk to force home Watertown's sixth run. J.J. Wagner (Pacific) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field and Jacob Boylan (Kansas) added an RBI single. Lopez drove in his second run of the game in the fifth with an RBI single.

Utica's K'Shawn Smith (Stetson) scored on a Jay Gonzalez (Auburn) ground out in the fifth but that would be the final run of the game.

The game went into a rain delay prior to the top of the seventh inning and the tarp was placed on the field. Play would not resume and the contest was called after six innings.

Watertown starter Joe Adel pitched four innings to claim the victory in the rain-shortended game. He allowed three runs on five hits but blanked the Brewers in three of his four frames. Logan Grant (Creighton) and Tanner Rahauser (Millersville) each pitched one inning in relief.

Bobby Indeglia led the Rams offense. He finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs scored. Brad Rush and Joe Moroney scored twice.

For the Brewers, Jay Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Jorge Pantoja (Alabama State) took the loss. He pitched 3.2 innings and allowed eight runs on seven hits. He walked four and struck out four.

The Brewers are now 3.5 games out of the final playoff spot with four games left to play, Utica returns to Donovan Stadium on Sunday evening for a doubleheader against the Elmira Pioneers with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The Brewers need to win all of their four remaining games to keep their playoff hopes alive. Watertown is off on Sunday and then travels to Adirondack on Monday night.
