The PGCBL Develops Future Stars Off The Field Too - Part 3
In it's first three years of existence, the PGCBL has sent more than 150 players onto professional baseball careers. The league was also the launching pad for more than two dozen interns, who parlayed their experience in the PGCBL into careers in professional sports
This is the third of an annual series in which we shine the spotlight on a few of our intern alumni.
Sara Helm, worked in the Albany Dutchmen internship program in 2011 and 2012 before she graduated with an MA in Sport Management from St. Leo University. She now works as a Sales Associate in Fenway Park for the Boston Red Sox. Another former Dutchmen intern Billy Blake, who recently graduated from SUNY - Oneonta, now works for the NBC Albany affiliate WNYT and in the Athletic Department for The College of St. Rose.
Former Newark Pilots intern Travis Larner, a graduate of St. Fisher College, is currently working in the Media Relations Department for the Baltimore Orioles Spring Training Office. At the conclusion of Spring Training he will start a job with the Corpus Christi Hooks, the "AA" affiliate of the Houston Astros.
Several former interns of the Elmira Pioneers have joined Major League franchises to begin their careers. From the Pioneers intern staff of 2010, Patrick Nickerson (Seton Hall University) has started work as a Ticket Sales Rep for the Chicago Cubs. Anthony Burchette (George Mason University) from the Pioneers intern staff of 2011 is working as a Ticket Sales Rep for the Washington Nationals. Also from the Pioneers internship class of 2011, Kenny Lindbergh (Medaille College) was recently hired as the Operations Manager of the Auburn Doubledays (NYPL).
The Utica Comets, the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, seem to have a pipeline to the intern staff of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. Zach Dooley (Marist College) followed former Golden Eagles intern Gina Nassivera to the Comets Ticket Sales department.
"I have been extolling the virtues of our internship programs since the league was formed in 2010.", stated PGCBL President Jeff Kunion. "The league prides itself on developing young talent for sports management careers upon graduation."
Andrew Naylor and James Troutmane are two outstanding internship graduates were recently hired within the PGCBL. They both had very positive feelings about the training they received.
"The Pioneers program was very in depth and well defined. You were given a great deal of responsibility and rotated thru various aspects of the organization. We were involved in managing game day ticket sales, on field promotions, concessions, cash audits and ballpark operations. We really got a tutorial on sales, something that had not been stressed in our classroom coursework. If you want real responsibility and an understanding of how to run a small business, which is what this team is, this internship is invaluable." stated former Pioneers intern Andrew Naylor, who is now the Assistant General Manager of the Newark Pilots.
"Being an intern with the Dutchmen provided me with opportunities that I probably wouldn't have had with any other baseball team. The Dutchmen allowed me to take on as much responsibility as I wanted, and that was great because I made the most of every situation. I contacted Little League teams and had them take part in the Dutchmen's baseball buddies program, conducted on field promotions in between innings and scheduled community service events for the players to attend. I highly recommend this internship to someone who is either trying to get their feet wet and get a foot in the door or for someone who wishes to continue to build their resume." commented James Troutmane, who will begin work this season as the Assistant General Manager for the Albany Dutchmen.
The PGCBL is affiliated with Perfect Game, the largest independent scouting service in the country. This year, more than 1,300 professional players had either worn the uniform of a PGCBL team or participated in a Perfect Game event.
This spring, the teams of the PGCBL are looking for our next group of "Off The Field Stars". For more information about the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League and available internship opportunities, visit www.pgcbl.org.
