Rams walk-off as winners against Utica

WATERTOWN, NY- The Watertown Rams scored a run in the bottom of the tenth inning on a throwing error by Utica Brewer pitcher Shane Kemp (Washington) as the Rams climbed back to .500 and beat the Brewers 6-5. Jake Sale (Parkland) picked up the win for the Rams.

Charles Leblanc (PITT-Fall 2014) doubled to lead off the inning for Watertown. Santino Alteri (Alvernia) laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing Leblanc to third before Kemp threw the ball over the head of Hayden Kelly (Polk State), which allowed the winning run to cross.

Watertown scored in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at five and send it to extra innings. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Tyler Decker (Adelphi) walked and was pinch run for by Drew Hercik (East Stroudsburg). Hercik stole second base and advanced to third when no one covered second base and Utica catcher Crachard Laing’s (Bluefield State) throw sailed into centerfield. Hercik scored on a wild pitch while Nick Moore (Missouri) was down to his last strike.

Utica took a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning on RBI singles from Mike Wright (Coppin State), Reno Rankin (LA Mission College) and Cody Burton (UAH). Watertown had previously scored three runs in the fifth, two coming on a Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) double and the other coming on a Tyler Decker single. The Brewers scored lone runs in the fourth and fifth while Watertown took an early 1-0 lead in the third.

Gaetano and James Bonds (San Diego) paced the Rams lineup with two hits apiece. Charles Leblanc sparked the Rams in the tenth and in the fifth, doubling to lead off both innings.

Five Utica hitters tallied multiple hits. Utica starter Robert Hardy (Please note that it was Robert who started the game, not Zach) went five innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out five. Watertown starter Sean Rackoski (Kansas) went five plus innings, allowing five runs (four earned) in his no decision.

The Rams travel to Mohawk Valley on Tuesday as they take on the DiamondDawgs in Little Falls. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Utica will play host to Adirondack on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
