Pilots Earn 8-7 Victory In Extra Innings

The Newark Pilots (5-6) earned their first home win of the season with a thrilling 8-7 win over the Watertown Wizards (3-8) at Colburn Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Pilots, who fell 5-4 to Cooperstown in 13 innings on Saturday night, scored four runs in the bottom of the 13th to edge the Wizards. Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta) hit the game-winning single to bring home Michael Bolling (Lewis) for the tying run and Matt Vera (San Joaquin Delta) for the game-winner.

The action started off rather slow during the first eight innings of regulation. The Wizards took a 2-0 lead in the fifth when Brandon Cipolla (Holy Cross) slapped a triple to right center, then scored on the following base hit from Erick Gaylord (Campbell).

Up 2-1, Watertown extended its lead with two more runs in the top of the ninth. Gaylord hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Kevin Whitehead (Canisius), giving the Wizards the 4-1 advantage. Watertown starter Robert Rodgers (Keystone) threw eight full innings, fanning six batters and giving up only one run.

The Pilots answered in the bottom half of the frame. Tim Sylvester (St. John Fisher) was called upon to give the Wizards the save, but gave up three runs as Newark came back to tie the contest.

All three of those runs were scored on a home run by Bolling. The speedy outfielder is not known for his power, but sent the pitch from the Wizards' closer over the right field wall for his first home run of the season.

Both teams went through scoreless through the 10th, 11th, and 12th innings. For the second straight game at Colburn Park, 13 innings were needed to settle the score.

Watertown jumped out to a three-run advantage in the final frame. Already up 5-4, Cipolla's double to left center scored two more runs. For a moment, it appeared the Pilots let another game slip away in overtime, until Villa's walk-off single gave Newark its only lead of the game.

Before the top of the 13th came to an end, Watertown manager Jason Shone and second baseman Alex Maldonado were ejected. Maldonado was called out on a close play at first to end the inning. An upset Maldonado was ejected when he argued the call with the base umpire. Shone then stormed the field to defend his player, and was also tossed.

Justin D'Amato (St. John Fisher) started on the mound for Newark, striking out 10 batters and allowing four runs. Matt Frahm (Lewis) earned his second win of the season in relief. Bolling led the Pilots with three hits, three runs, and three RBI's.
Even Kirsch (Franklin Pierce) was tagged with the loss for Watertown. Cipolla had a team-high four hits and three RBI's.

The Newark Pilots head out on the road Monday for a 7:05 p.m. contest with the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. The Watertown Wizards return home to face the Albany Dutchmen, also at 7:05 p.m.
