The Daily Rundown: July 9, 2014

Rain delayed, suspended, and postponed games in the PGCBL last night.

Last night’s games:

Amsterdam 3 Albany 2

The Amsterdam Mohawks beat the Albany Dutchmen in a rain-shortened affair on Tuesday, 3-2. The Mohawks have now won 18-of-19 and lead the East Division by 2.5 games. Albany drops to 12-14 on the year.

The home team took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a Jonathan Pryor RBI groundout, scoring Jake Salpietro. Albany responded with a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at one. Cameron Miller hit an RBI single, his 10th RBI of the season, to bring home Adam Lee.

Amsterdam retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Brendan Tracy scored on a throwing error by Justin Brock. Albany pinch hitter Nick Jewett tied the game at two in the top of the seventh with an RBI single, scoring Ryan Toomey. The Mohawks took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning after Thomas Kain hit a double to lead off the inning, was pinch run for by Marcus Carson, and John Razzino singled home Carson to give Amsterdam the lead for good. After a rain delay of approximately fifteen minutes, the game was called.

Joe Randall picked up the win for Amsterdam, his third of the season. Albany’s Austin Foote took the loss and is now 0-2 on the year.

Utica 10 Glens Falls 6 Game One

The Utica Brewers ended an eight-game losing streak on Tuesday, beating the Glens Falls Golden Eagles at home, 10-6. The Brewers are now 4-23 on the season and the Golden Eagles are 10-16.

Utica got out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Zacarias Hardy hit an RBI single, Hayden Kelly brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, a groundout plated another, and two runs scored on an error. Glens Falls got one back in the top of the second on a Brian Fay RBI single before Hardy hit his second RBI single of the game in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-1. Brennan Price hit a three-run home run in the third for the Golden Eagles to pull within two, 6-4.

In the fourth, Hardy hit another RBI single and Kelly added another sacrifice fly. Glens Falls made it 8-5 in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch, before Utica scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Kelly RBI double and an RBI fielder’s choice. Ryan Dodge hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh for Glens Falls, but it wasn’t enough as Utica won the seven-inning matchup, 10-6.

Robert Hardy picked up his first win of the season for Utica, going four innings and allowing four runs (three earned) while striking out five. Ben Brown allowed eight runs (six earned) in three innings as he took the loss for Glens Falls.

Mohawk Valley at Elmira

Game one of the double-header between the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs and Elmira Pioneers was suspended in the top of the fourth inning with Mohawk Valley leading 7-3. It will be resumed on July 30 in Elmira.

Game two of the double-header has been rescheduled for July 25 in Little Falls as part of a double-header. Both games will be seven innings and Mohawk Valley will be the home team in both games. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

Watertown at Newark

The Newark/Watertown game scheduled for last night will be made up on July 23 in Newark as part of a double-header. Both games will be seven innings and first pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

Tonight’s games:

Amsterdam at Utica 7:00 p.m.

After both teams started the season 2-6, the Amsterdam Mohawks took off while Utica remained in the cellar. The Mohawks have won 18-of-19 and are now in first place in the East Division, while Utica is 4-23 and in last place in the West. The Brewers are coming off their first win in nine games, a 10-6 win over Glens Falls. They meet at Murnane Field on Wednesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Elmira at Glens Falls 7:00 p.m.

The Elmira Pioneers will look to pull closer to first place in the West Division, as they travel to Glens Falls to take on the Golden Eagles. Glens Falls is coming off a 10-6 loss at Utica. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Adirondack at Mohawk Valley 7:05 p.m.

The Adirondack Trail Blazers and Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs will meet for the sixth time this season on Wednesday night. The DiamondDawgs have won the first five matchups of the season. The Trail Blazers will look to get in the win column against their cross-division foes with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Newark at Albany 7:05 p.m.

After a great start to the season, it hasn’t been a stretch to remember for the Albany Dutchmen. They now sit at 12-14 after starting the year 8-1. They will host Newark Pilots at Bob Bellizzi Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
