The Daily Rundown: July 22, 2014

Last night’s games:

Utica 4 Albany 3

The Utica Brewers have won consecutive games for the first time this season, defeating the Albany Dutchmen, 4-3, in 10 innings.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Albany scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Will Miller had an RBI groundout, scoring Dave Vaccaro for the first run. Justin Brock followed with an RBI single that scored Nick Morton. Utica scored a lone run in the seventh to make it 2-1. With Cedric Mullins on third, Cody Burton grounded out to second base, scoring Mullins.

The Brewers took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth on an Anthony Villa RBI double to left center and a Zacarias Hardy RBI double. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Nick Jewett hit an RBI single to left field that scored Adam Lee to tie the game at three. A Villa RBI fielder’s choice in the tenth that scored Zach Torriente proved to be the winning run for the visiting Brewers.

Josh Garran allowed one run in two innings of relief and picked up the win for Utica. Chad Moss tossed a scoreless tenth to earn his first save of the season. Austin Foote allowed the run in the tenth, taking the loss. Monday marked the first time this season that Utica came back from a deficit and wound up winning the game.

Mohawk Valley 3 Amsterdam 1

The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs snapped Amsterdam’s eight-game winning streak with a 3-1 win in Little Falls. The DiamondDawgs picked up a game on the East leaders, but still sit seven games back. Amsterdam went to 29-9 on the year.

Mohawk Valley jumped on the board in the first, scoring two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Eric Strano hit an RBI triple following a Joey Carcone leadoff single to score the first run. With one away, Mike Triller grounded out to second, scoring Strano.

The DiamondDawgs added their third run in the bottom of the fifth, Strano again with the RBI extra base hit. After Carcone doubled to leadoff the inning, Strano doubled him in to make it 3-0 Mohawk Valley. Amsterdam scored its lone run of the game in the top of the eighth inning as Joey Aiola walked with the bases loaded to bring home John Razzino.

Bryan Greig earned the win for Mohawk Valley, throwing six scoreless innings and striking out four. Matt Pidich earned his fourth save of the season, recording four outs, three via the strikeout. Taylor Blatch took the loss for Amsterdam, his first of the season.

Glens Falls 5 Newark 2

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles climbed to just two games back of the Albany Dutchmen for the third and final playoff spot in the East Division with a 5-2 win over the Newark Pilots. Newark is now a half game behind Watertown for the West Division lead.

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth when Glens Falls took a 3-0 lead. Ryan Hooper hit an RBI single that scored Brandon Purcell for the first run. Colton Montgomery kept up his hot hitting with a 2-RBI double later in the inning, scoring Hooper and Richard Gugliemi. Newark got two runs back in the home half, one coming on a Zach Wall home run and the other coming on a Luis Silverio RBI double that scored Tommy Wagner.

Gugliemi pushed the lead to two in the top of the seventh with an RBI single that scored JQ Folena. Montgomery hit his third home run of the season in the top of the eighth to make it 5-2 Glens Falls, what wound up being the final score.

Williams Durruthy picked up his third win of the season for Glens Falls, going six innings and allowing two runs (both earned) on just four hits. Tyler Ehlers notched his fifth save of the season, hurling 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Andrew Sanders fell to 0-5 for Newark as he allowed four runs (all earned) on ten hits over 6.1 innings.

Tonight’s games:

Newark at Watertown 7:00 p.m.

In a game with major standings implications, the Watertown Rams host the Newark Pilots. Watertown currently leads the Pilots by a half game. Watertown has a 3-1 edge in the season series between the two clubs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Albany at Mohawk Valley 7:05 p.m.

A night after beating the Amsterdam Mohawks, which is easier said than done, the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs will stay at home, this time facing the Albany Dutchmen. Albany is coming off a tough 4-3 loss in extra innings against Utica last night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Utica at Elmira 7:05 p.m.

Coming off back-to-back wins for the first time this season, the Utica Brewers will travel to Elmira to take on West Division foe Elmira. The Pioneers had the night off on Monday, but are coming off a 12-8 win against Newark on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
