Mohawks beat Albany, clinch East Division

Filed by the Amsterdam Mohawks:

The Amsterdam Mohawks defeated the Albany Dutchmen by a score of 4-2. Tommy Kain (Lynn) led the way with a 2-run homerun, his fifth of the season.

Tommy Kain and E.J. Ashworth (Fairfield) helped the Mohawks win their thirty-first game of the season. Kain went 1-for-4 with a homerun, which gave the Mohawks the lead in the second inning. Ashworth struck out two over six innings, and only allowed one run on five hits.

Jake Welch (Notre Dame College) pitched well for the Dutchmen. He struck out five over seven innings, and allowed three earned runs on five hits. Adam Lee (Lipscomb) went 2-for-5, and provided most of the offense for Albany.

The first run of the game came on a questionable call in the top of the second inning. Dave Vaccaro (Radford) was at-bat with Jake Hanson (Valparaiso) on first, and Justin Brock (Franklin Pierce) on third. With two strikes, Hanson took off for first. Vaccaro struck out on the pitch, and Hanson was thrown out at second trying to steal. The umpire ruled that Justin Brock came into score before Hanson was tagged out at second, but Hanson was clearly tagged out beforehand. Amsterdam’s Coach Keith Griffin came out furiously to argue with the umpire, but the call was not overturned. Albany headed into the bottom of the second with a 1-0 lead.

The Mohawks took the lead in the fourth inning on a Tommy Kain two-run home run. Kain took the first pitch he saw in the at-bat and launched over the left-field fence to give the Mohawks a 2-1 lead.

The Mohawks landed another insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brendan Tracy (Fairfield) led off the inning with a single and was moved over to third base on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Tracy scored on a wild pitch to give the Mohawks a 3-1 lead.

The Dutchmen got a run back in the top of the seventh inning. After a Jake Hanson single and a Dave Vaccaro (Radford) double, Danny Hrbek (Radford) grounded out to shortstop to score Hanson.  However, Amsterdam’s John McCarren (Wake Forest) was able to get out of the jam and keep the score at 3-2.

Jack Czeszewski (Illinois State) started the bottom of the eighth inning with a double, and later scored on a Joe Purritano (Dartmouth) RBI-single to make it 4-2. Amsterdam would hold on from there to earn the victory.

E.J. Ashworth earned the win for the Amsterdam Mohawks, and improved to 5-0 on the season. Thomas Hackimer (St. John’s) came in and pitched a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the year. Jake Welch took the loss for Albany and is now 3-1 on the season.

The Mohawks will travel to Boonville to take on the Adirondack Trailblazers for their next game, and the Albany Dutchmen will host the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. The Mohawks and Dutchmen only have one last game against each other this season. Albany will host Amsterdam on July 31st for the season finale.
