Newark Pilots Add Two Ivy League Champions

NEWARK, N.Y. – The Newark Pilots have added two more players from two-time defending Ivy League champion Columbia University for the 2015 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) season.

Sophomore Kyle Bartelman and junior Matt Robinson will suit up for the Pilots alongside Columbia teammate Logan Boyher, who will be returning to Newark for his second straight summer. Boyher, a junior catcher, helped the Pilots reach the PGCBL Championship Series in 2014.

“I am pleased that Matt and Kyle will be joining Logan in the growing group of Columbia players who have played in Newark,” said Pilots head coach Mike Armstrong. “I am excited for them to contribute on and off the field, and carry on the tradition of talented, stand-up players from such a storied program.”

Bartelman made appearances at first, second, third and both corner outfield positions during his freshman season with the Lions. He played in 18 games, making 11 starts and hit .189 (7-for-37). He drove in eight runs and scored five more. The 5-10 utility player was also 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. Last summer, batted .333 to help the Shelter Island Bucks reach the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League finals. During his senior season at Culver Academies in Culver, Ind., Bartelman batted .385 with 11 doubles, six triples and two homers, and was a Rawlings/Perfect Game Preseason Central Region honorable mention selection.

Robinson is a 5-10 right-handed pitcher from Orlando, Fla. As a sophomore in 2014, he made nine relief appearance for the Lions, compiling 14.1 innings with a 5.02 ERA and nine strikeouts. He earned multiple strikeouts on four occasions. Robinson surrendered just one hit in two scoreless frames against UTSA in addition to scoreless innings against Yale and St. John’s (N.Y.). At Winter Park High School in Winter Park, Fla., he was a 2012 All-Metro Conference First Team selection and garnered Rawlings/Perfect Game Preseason Florida Region honorable mention accolades.

The Lions finished last season with a program-record 29 wins and their 12th Ivy League title. Bartelman, Boyher and Robinson, along with Newark alumni George Martin (2014) and David Vandercook (2013) will look for another league crown in 2015.

“The coaching staff at Columbia works hard to put together very good teams year in and year out, and we are lucky to have a solid relationship with their program,” Armstrong said.

The Newark Pilots return to Colburn Park for their 2015 season opener on Friday, June 5 against Mohawk Valley.
