Troy Scocca (Mohawk Valley 2015) Named MAAC Player of the Week

EDISON, N.J. – After leading the Stags offensively to their first 3-0 start in program history, Troy Scocca (Mohawk Valley 2015) has been honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for the first time in his career as the junior was named the MAAC Player of the Week. Scocca led the Stags with two home runs, seven runs scored, and a .900 slugging percentage in a three-game sweep of Delaware State.

“For the first outing out on grass it was a good showing for Troy,” Head Coach Bill Currier said. “He had a good pitch selection at the plate. He didn’t try and do too much, stayed through the middle of the field, and did a good job. He also happened to get some big hits with runners on base also.”

Scocca scored seven runs in the three games combined the most on a Stags’ team that combined for 39 runs, the most ever through the first three games of a Fairfield season. His best performance came in the season opener when he reached base three times and scored three runs while also blasting his first homerun of the season.

Scocca would add another homer in the series finale. In the three games, Scocca reached base 53 percent of his plate appearances with a team-high four walks.

This comes after a breakout summer campaign for Scocca who led the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League in RBI and triples. He led Mohawk Valley to their first championship in program history, by driving in the tying run in the Championship Game after he hit the eventual game-winning homer in the semifinals. For his accomplishments, he was named to the PGCBL First Team.

“I think he’s had a good breakout,” Coach Currier said. “Certainly last season he got better and continued by having a great summer. He’s done well in the fall and he is keeping it going. I think he is figuring it out and he’s a good solid hitter in the middle of our lineup.”

Scocca and the Stags will head back to North Carolina when they travel to Chapel Hill to take on No. 10 UNC for a three-game series starting Friday at 3pm.
