Edmondson’s Brother Sends Newark Pilots Four From UMass Lowell

Newark, NY – The Newark Pilots have bolstered their roster for the 2016 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) season with four freshmen from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, members of the Division I America East Conference.

River Hawks assistant coach Jerod Edmondson, brother of Newark head coach Chris Edmondson, helped the Pilots secure the services of first-year talents Brian Dolan, Chris Sharpe, Mark Tumosa, and Russ Olive.

An accomplished athlete on the gridiron, Dolan began his college athletic career with the University of Rhode Island football team, before transferring to UMass Lowell to focus on baseball. Due to NCAA transfer rules, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound right-handed pitcher is redshirting this spring. Dolan is a Lowell, Mass., native, having graduated from Lowell High School in 2014. Perfect Game USA named him an All-Northeast Region Honorable Mention as a senior.

Sharpe has been a mainstay in left field for the River Hawks in 2016, having started 41 of the team’s 43 games. He’s registered 29 hits, including a team-best five doubles, in addition to 19 runs and 14 RBIs. The 6-foot-1, 188-pound outfielder has also worked out 20 walks, third-most on the squad. The Burlington, Mass., native opened his debut season on a tear, recording hits in nine of his first 11 collegiate games. In UMass Lowell’s season opener versus Nicholls State University, Sharpe started his first-ever game in left field and doubled twice with a pair of runs.

Tumosa has seen time at second, third, and shortstop, having made a total of 22 appearances. He’s clubbed 11 hits with seven RBIs and five runs. His on-base percentage sits at a robust .361, third-best on the team thanks to the 10 walks he has been issued. The 5-foot-11 infielder slugged a bases-clearing triple to collect a season-high three RBIs on May 8 against University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Before enrolling at UMass Lowell, Tumosa, originally from Willington, Conn., spent a post-graduate year at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where paced the Ascenders with 38 runs, 27 RBIs, and 10 doubles in 2015.

Olive is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound southpaw hurler for the Red Hawks. The freshman from Chelmsford, Mass., has made two appearances out of the bullpen. He fired 2.1 scoreless frames in his debut against Mississippi State on February 27. He followed that up with a scoreless inning opposite New York Institute of Technology on March 20. Olive has also seen plenty of work at the plate, mostly as the designated hitter. He has displayed his versatility by collecting 18 hits, six RBIs and five runs. Olive finished 3-for-4 in his best hitting performance against UMBC in the series opener on March 26.

The Newark Pilots open the 2016 PGCBL season on the road on Wednesday, June 1, against the Jamestown Jammers. The home opener at historic Colburn Park is scheduled for Friday, June 3, at 7:05 p.m. against the Geneva Red Wings.
