The Oneonta Outlaws are starting their second stint the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, and they made sure their first game at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Little Falls would be one to remember.
The Outlaws and the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs would combine for four errors, but it was the team from Oneonta who took advantage of their errors, defeating the Diamond Dawgs by the score of 4-3.
Both starters, Oneonta’s Cal Lawrence (Mahopac, NY/Binghamton University) and Mohawk Valley’s Joe DeSarro (Frankfort, NY/Herkimer CC) would start out strong. The two starters would only allow three baserunners through the first two innings. As a matter of fact, Lawrence would not allow a hit through three innings, only allowing two batters to reach base through a walk, one hit batsman, and one reaching by way of an error.
The Outlaws would score the first and the second runs of their 2016 season in the top of the third inning, as back-to-back doubles by Quin Cotton (Parker, CO/Grand Canyon University) and Carter Austin (Endicott, NY/University of Massachusetts) would score Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, FL/Washington and Lee University) and Cotton. Both hits looped out into the outfield and were dropped on tough plays.
Unfortunately, the errors would finally get to Lawrence, as an error by third baseman Cameron Coons (Gansevoort, NY/Alvernia University) in the bottom of the third would allow the first Diamond Dawg run of the season, scored by center fielder Mike Martinez (West New York, NJ/Rutgers University). That error was Coons’ second error of the inning. However, that run was the only one the Diamond Dawgs would muster in the third.
The Diamond Dawgs (0-1) would tie up the game in the fourth, as a crisp hit by Nick Plachno (Bristol, CT/Central Connecticut State University) would score Justin Kiesow (Frankfort, NY/Herkimer CC). That would chase Lawrence from the game, giving reliever Austin Higginbotham (Gainesville, GA/Wofford College) a second-and-third jam. While Mohawk Valley had gotten that first run, they would not muster a hit until the fourth inning.
Oneonta would retake the lead in the top of the fifth inning, as a long triple by Yale Hughes (Cortland, NY/West Liberty University) into deep right field would score Ruedisili. That would end the night for the Frankfort native DeSarro, as he would be replaced by Jonathan McKinney (Marietta, GA/Georgia College). The Outlaws would get to McKinney quickly, as Austin’s RBI single would score Hughes. That would be all that Oneonta would get in the fifth, as McKinney would get the last two outs to end the top of the fifth.
Plachno would cut the Oneonta lead to one in the eighth inning, as his hot grounder that dribbled into the outfield would score Tanner Wesseling (Kent, WA/University of Tennessee-Martin). That would be all reliever Josh Covey () would give up, as he would strike Martinez out to end the inning.
In the ninth, Hughes, who had been serving as Oneonta’s (1-0) designated hitter all night, only allowed one Diamond Dawg to reach base to close the book on the first game of the Outlaws’ second stint in the PGCBL.
Hughes would get the save for the Outlaws, while Lawrence would get the win. DeSarro would be saddled with the loss for Mohawk Valley.
The Outlaws head back home for their first home game of the 2016 season as they play host to the Elmira Pioneers. The Diamond Dawgs continue their home stand night as they host the newly-branded Utica Blue Sox in their 2016 debut.
