DiamondDawgs Walk Home With 2-1 Win Over Oneonta

LITTLE FALLS, NY-- The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs are winless no more.

Stellar pitching all over the Diamond Dawg rotation, from starter Jonathan McKinney (Marietta, GA/Georgia College) to closer Jon Sell (Burnt Hills, NY/Herkimer CC), allowed Mohawk Valley to pick up their first win of the 2016 season. They did it by avenging their Opening Day loss, knocking off Eastern Divison leader Oneonta by the score of 2-1.

Two errors in the bottom of the first, one by first baseman Carter Austin (Endicott, NY/University of Massachusetts) and one by catcher Ural Forbes (Freeport, Bahamas/ Galveston College), would give the Diamond Dawgs their first run of the game, as Justin Fowler (Aliso Viejo, CA/Dartmouth College) would find his way home on said errors.

The Outlaws would tie up the score quickly, as two doubles by Sean Getman (Oneonta, NY/SUNY Cortland) and Forbes would score Getman. That would be all that starter McKinney would give up, as he would settle down and not give up another run.

Both pitchers would go well into the game, pitching six solid innings before both were replaced. McKinney would be replaced by Nick Plachno (Bristol, CT/Central Connecticut State University), and Plachno would pitch admirably, starting out by giving up a double, then setting down the next two Outlaws out to end the seventh inning..

Oneonta reliever Mike Adams (Mechanicsburg, PA/Hartford CC) would find himself with the bases quickly full of Diamond Dawgs in the bottom of the seventh. After walking Christian Malave (Milton, CT/Herkimer CC) with the bases loaded to score Tanner Leenknecht (Billings, MT/Treasure Valley CC). Adams would find his groove, striking out the next two Mohawk Valley batters to end the seventh inning.

Leeknecht’s walk home would prove to be the game winner, as closer Sell went two solid innings, only allowing one walk to close the book on the Outlaws.

Sell, with two innings of no-hit ball, would pick up the save for Mohawk Valley. Chris Henry would pick up the win, while Adams would find himself saddled with the loss for Oneonta.

With the win, the Diamond Dawgs snap a six-game losing streak.

Mohawk Valley will end their short stay at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Friday, as they play host to the Utica Blue Sox. The Outlaws will head back to Damaschke Field on Friday as they will play an inter-division matchup with the Geneva Red Wings.
