Pioneers extinguish Flames In 9-3 Win

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira Pioneers (4-2) were able to get out to an early lead on the Onondaga Flames (2-3) and would control the game from there, as they picked up a 9-3 victory at Dunn Field.

Jake Hamilton(Kentucky) was stellar for Elmira, working six innings and only allowing three runs thanks in part to four double play balls he was able to induce. One of those double plays came off the bat of Sam Little (Ithaca) with the bases loaded and one out in the 3rd that allowed Hamilton to exit the inning unscathed.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Pioneers jumped out to a 5-0 lead they would not relinquish. Blake Shinkle (Kansas) lead off with a single, Joe Preziuso (Canisius) was then hit with a pitch, and Andrew Orzel (Wofford) then walked to load the bases. Leadoff hitter Bryan Seamster (Ole Miss) tapped a ball to third that the Flames tried to come home with, but the throw got away from the catcher Dylan Nolan (Wells) and the error allowed two runs to cross the plate. Brett Vosik (Kansas) then grounded one through the right side for an RBI single pushing the lead to three. Jonathon Crimmin followed up with a line drive single to right that got by the right fielder Sam Little and allowed two runs to score, but the Flames would record an out on the play as Crimmin would get caught in a run down between second and third base.

The Flames would try to answer back in the 4th, but with runners on first and second, Hamilton got a 6-3 double play off the bat of Dylan Nolan to end the threat.

Elmira would tack on a run in the bottom of the 4th, when a passed ball allowed Joe Preziuso to score and make the score 6-0.

Onondaga would fight back however, as they scored three times in the sixth. Gage Lanning (Canisius) laced a two-RBI single to cut the Flames deficit to just four, and then with the bases loaded, Kyle Gallagher (Cornell) hit into a fielder’s choice that plated the Flames third run.

The Pioneers would respond to the Flames with force, picking up two runs in the bottom of the 6th to extend their lead to five. An Andrew Orzel sac fly would plate Casey Oliver (UL-Monroe) and then Bryan Seamster ripped a double to right that scored Blake Shinkle making the score 8-3.

In the 7th, Elmira would add another run for good measure, as a bases loaded walk to Andrew Orzel pushed across their ninth run of the game.

Allbry Major (Xavier) would come on to close the game, working the final two frames in scoreless fashion to seal the win for Elmira. Jake Hamilton picked up the win for the Pioneers, as he turned in a quality start, working six innings, giving up three runs(two earned) and striking out 5.

Justin Beyer (Niagara County C.C) is dealt the loss. Beyer threw five innings and gave up six runs, only two of which were earned.

Elmira will travel to face the Adirondack Trailblazers tomorrow night, Friday, June 9th. The Pioneers will be back at home on Saturday to take on the Geneva Red Wings.
