NEWARK, N.Y. – The Newark Pilots and Onondaga Flames split a non-traditional doubleheader at Colburn Park on Friday night, with the Pilots taking the opener by a score of 18-9 and the Flames securing the late game 9-7.
Game 1 of the doubleheader started on Father’s Day, and was picked up in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Pilots leading 5-2. They would add 8 in that inning to go up 13-2, and would win by a final score of 18-9. Will Frank (Canisius) started the game and went 4 innings of 1 hit ball, 2 runs (0 earned), 2 walks and 5 strikeouts, he picked up the no-decision. Zach Mann (Saginaw Valley State) picked up his first win in 4 innings of relief. Jake Binder (Ithaca) takes the loss after tossing 3 and a third, allowing 6 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.
The Game 1 scoring started in the top of the third, when Trey Baur (Cornell) drove in a run with an infield single, the second run scored on a passed ball to go up 2-0. John Balliet (Orange Coast CC) tied the game up at 2 when he launched a two out, two run over the right center field wall.
They put this game out of reach when they sent 14 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth when they put up 11. The first 3 were scored back on Father’s Day, singles by Tanner Huddleston (Jones County JC) and Over Torres (Yavapai CC), and a throwing error got the score to 5-2. When the game resumed this afternoon, Balliet was hit by a Jeff DeStefano (Canisius) with the bases loaded for the games 6th run, then D’Marcus Guillory (Motlow CC) scored on a passed ball to go up 7-2. Will Allocca (Virginia) drove in 2 with a single and Jonathan Parker (Jones County JC) drove in 2 with a double to make it 11-2. Parker came around to score on a wild pitch. Torres rounded out the 11 run fourth with a solo home run to deep center field.
The Flames got 3 back in the fifth on a 2 run double from Stephen Bennett (Canisius) and a single by Bour to cut the lead to 13-5. In the bottom half, the Pilots got 2 across on a Huddleston 2 run single to go back up 15-5. In the top of the sixth Onondaga scored 2 on an Alex Canty (Monroe CC) single and Colin BeVard (SUNY Cortland) sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 15-7, then scored 1 in the seventh on an Adam Gallagher (Ithaca) single. 15-8 is the closest the Flames would get, Newark scored 3 in the bottom half of the seventh on a Torres 2 run single and a Guillory hit by pitch to go back up 10, 18-8. The Flames finished off the scoring in the eighth with a Tyler Rourke (Alabama A&M) run scored on a wild pitch.
Every Pilots starter scored a run in their 18-9 victory. Torres had the big day at the plate going 4-5 with a solo HR, a stolen base, a run scored and 4 driven in. Allocca went 3-4 with a stolen base, 2 runs scored and 2 runs driven in. Balliet led the way with 4, Huddleston scored 3 times. Torres led the team with 4 runs driven in, Huddleston and Balliet both drove 3 home. Baur had the big day at the plate for the Flames going 3-4 with a stolen base, 1 run scored and 2 driven in.
The After a 90-minute rain delay to start in between games, the Pilots and Flames squared off in Game 2. Onondaga got 7 runs in the second to knock Chris Vitale (Erie CC) out of the game. After trailing 7-0 through 3, the Pilots got 4 back in the bottom of the fourth, and 3 in the fifth to tie it up at 7. The Flames would get 2 in the top of the sixth to finish out the scoring, and win the game 9-7. Rourke picks up the win for the Flames, Jake Bernardo (Fordham) takes the loss, and Matthew Bowman (SUNY Broome) picks up his second save.
Onondaga sent 12 hitters to the plate in their 7 run top of the second. Sam Little (Ithaca), Bennett, Canty, and Laz Moralez (Tomkins County CC) all drove in runs with bases loaded walks. Kyle Gallagher (Cornell) drove in 1 and Baur drove in 2 both on singles to go up 7-0.
The Pilots got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Wei-Chi Chen (Vanung) bounced a slow chopper to third with the bases loaded, he reached first with an infield single to drive Po-Chuan Pan (Fu Jen Catholic) in. Peter Battaglia (Niagara) came around to score when Bennett’s throw got away from the first basemen Ricky Sisto (Monroe CC), Colton Carney (Seton Hill) came around to score from first when Sisto’s throw got away from Camillo Spinoso (Le Moyne) behind the plate. Chen scored the Pilots 4th run on an error from Canty.
Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Carney drove in a run with a ground out, Battaglia scored a run on an error, and Zach Santoto (Notre Dame College) hit a game tying double to right center to even the score at 7. The Flames re-took the lead in the top of the sixth on a Canty single with two runners on, the 9th run came in to score on a Mark McKenna (Canisius) error in center.
The Pilots host the Elmira Pioneers tomorrow night at Colburn Park. The Onondaga Flames are on the road in Albany.
