Late Surge Lifts Pioneers Past Jammers, 9-5

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Thanks to some late inning offense, the Elmira Pioneers (18-17) bested the Jamestown Jammers (26-9) by a final score of 9-5 on Thursday evening at Dunn Field.

The Jammers jumped out to an early lead in the first when Ben Brookover (UTSA) blasted a ball over the left-center field wall for a two-run home run, his third homer of the season.

Things would stay scoreless from that point forward until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Pioneers would surge in front. Ayrton Schafer (Samford) opened the Pioneers account with a line drive RBI single to left. Brayden combs followed Schafer a dribbled up the middle that was booted by the shortstop Jimmy Standohar (Mercyhurst) which allowed Allbry Major (Xavier) to score the tying run. Another Jamestown miscue, this time a throwing error by the third baseman Chris Estrada (UTSA), on a groundball hit by Blake Shinkle (Kansas) with two outs allowed the go ahead run to score and gave the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.

The Pioneers would tack on another run in the fifth. A throwing error by the pitcher Cory Blessing (Ohio) on a pickoff attempt at first, allowed Troy Dixon (Samford) to go all the way to third. Major then singled Dixon home with Baltimore chop over the head of the first baseman Brookover with the Jammers defense playing in.

Jamestown would tie the game in the sixth after getting their first two men aboard to open the frame. A Standohar bunt pushed those runners to second and third and a subsequent wild pitched allowed the Jammers to cut the deficit to one. John Conti (Canisius) then bounced out to short which brought home the tying run.

In the seventh inning, relief pitcher Alvin Vega (Canisius) loaded the bases on three walks before plunking Standohar on an 0-2 delivery which pushed home the go ahead run and gave the Jammers a 5-4 lead.

That lead would be short lived as the Pioneers would strike for three in the seventh inning, all with two outs. Brayden Combs (Kentucky) blooped a single up the middle which scored Schafer to tie the game at five. Then with two men aboard, Brett Vosik (Kansas) laced a double to right-center that cleared the bases and gave the Pioneers a 7-5 lead.

Major would double the Pioneers lead in the eighth. With one on and two out, Major crushed a ball over the wall in right-center field for a two-run home run, his second of the year, which helped seal the Pioneers victory.

Both starters pitched well, but did not factor into the decision. Jake Hamilton (Kentucky) three six innings and gave up four runs while striking out a season high six batters for Elmira, while Blessing tossed five innings giving up four runs, three earned, for Jamestown.

TJ Stuart (Manhattan) gets the win for the Pioneers, his first of the year, after he threw an inning and one-third of scoreless relief.

Nolan Hunt (Canisius) is tagged with the loss after allowing three runs, all earned, in an inning and two-thirds of relief.

The Pioneers play again tomorrow, Friday, July 14th against the Newark Pilots at Dunn field starting at 7:05.
