BOONVILLE, N.Y. - In their final Sunday matinee in 2017, the Adirondack Trail Blazers needed 10 innings to defeat the Oneonta Outlaws, 12-11, winning their first game at home since June 23.
Trouble came early for the Trail Blazers in the top of the first as Ben Dubas (Alvernia) and Matt Tsukroff (Binghamton) each hit a two-run home run, giving their club an early 4-0 lead.
Adirondack started to chip away at the Outlaws over the first few innings, racking up four hits and two runs. Zach Zschering (Adrian) hit an RBI single in the first and Joe Simone (Rider) hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Jordan Torrento (Adrian) in the bottom half of the third.
An RBI single from Tsukroff in the top of the fifth gave the Outlaws a 5-2 lead.
In the sixth, Oneonta strengthened their lead with a solo shot by Chris Tracz (Marist) and an RBI single from Mike Brown (Dartmouth); the lead grew to 7-2.
In the bottom of the inning, the Blazers gave Oneonta a run for their money, putting three runs on the board. Doubles by Simone and Tyler Bruno (Iona) brought all three runs in. Four other Trail Blazers reached base on a hit, an error, a walk and a fielder's choice.
With now a two-run lead, the Outlaws battled back and took a 9-5 lead. Dubas brought in both runs on a single in the top of the seventh. Mark Flynn (Columbia) and Nick Camilleri (Southern New Hampshire) scored on the play.
The Trail Blazers repeated the result of their sixth inning in the seventh, scoring three more runs. A pair of RBI doubles from Bruno and Dugan Darnell (Adrian) brought Adirondack within one run.
In the top of the ninth, Oneonta thought they had the game won after an insurance run came across courtesy of of a base hit by Brown.
Trailing 10-8 entering the bottom of the ninth, Adirondack found themselves down to their final strike on two occasions, but did manage to tie the game. Simone had an RBI single and scored off a passed ball to tie the game at 10.
Ryan Maya (Nova Southeastern), who replaced starter Jake VanBeber (SUNY Poly) after four innings, entered his sixth inning of relief in the top of the 10th. With the bases loaded, Maya walked Dorien Jenkins (Wofford), giving the Outlaws an 11-10 lead. Fortunately for the Blazers, Ian Fair (Northeastern) grounded into a double play, ending the top half of the inning.
In the bottom of the 10th with the bases loaded and two outs, Simone took full advantage of two walks and an error given up by the Outlaws and hit a game-winning single, scoring Bruno and Bay McIntosh (Florida Tech) and winning 12-11. Simone hit five-for-five with six RBI.
Maya earned his first win, making his record 1-1. He pitched six full innings and struck out four.
Jake Hershman (Wofford) pitched 3.2 innings with six strikeouts in his fifth loss in 2017. His record is now 0-5.
The Outlaws and Trail Blazers play each other again one more time on Tuesday in Oneonta.
