Dutchmen Split Doubleheader With Saugerties

Tuesday, July 13 (Saugerties, NY) — The Albany Dutchmen split a doubleheader with the Saugerties Stallions on the road Tuesday night. The split moved the Dutchmen record to 16-16 on the season.

The Dutchmen started the day on the right foot taking Game 1 5-4 in eight innings. It took extra innings to decide this contest as it was tied after the originally scheduled seven innings.

Saugerties jumped ahead first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. David Shackelford (Arizona) drove in two runs on a single to give the Stallions the 2-0 lead.

Albany would strike right back in the third innings, however. Ryan McGee (Siena) put the Dutchmen on the board with an RBI single. Will Stroud (Azusa Pacific) would then give the Dutchmen the lead with a two-RBI double to make the score 3-2.

The pitching would settle in after that. Dutchmen starter Ryan Yerby (RPI) would wind up posting 5.1 innings pitched, giving up just 5 hits, 3 earned runs while striking out 5.

Yerby’s third run given up would come in the sixth inning. Tyler Kelder (St. Bonaventure) would double to tie the game at 3-3. Colin Mackle (Marist) would drive in Kelder with a sac-fly to give the home side the 4-3 lead.

The Dutchmen would not go down easy though. With runners on and two outs Jack Peterson (Trinity) drove in the tying run on a hit to center field to tie the game at 4.

The game would be pushed into extra innings, which is when Mike Handal (Fairfield) drove in the winning run on a single to right field to give the Dutchmen the 5-4 lead.

Tristan Nemjo took the win thanks to his 2.2 innings of work on the mound as the Dutchmen took winning momentum into Game 2 thanks to the 5-4 win.

It was a similar start to Game 2 however. The Stallions jumped out ahead once again in the second inning when Albert Jennings (Washington State) drove in Mackle on a ground out to make the score 1-0.

The Dutchmen would once again get on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Stroud came up clutch again with another RBI double to tie the game 1-1.

Another run would not score until the bottom of the fourth. Mackle hit a ground-rule double to right field to drive in two runs. Cade Kendle (UC Irvine) then followed that up with a two-RBI single of his own to make the score 5-1.

The Dutchmen would get one run back in the fifth, however. Jake Defayette (RPI) scored on an error to make the score 5-2.

Albany would keep on crawling back as the game went on. Nick Schwartz (St. John’s) came across to score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Dutchmen would keep on going in the seventh inning. Stroud drove in another run on an RBI single to cut the deficit to just one but that was all they would get as the Stallions took Game 2 5-4.

The Dutchmen will have an off day Wednesday before visiting Glens Falls on Thursday. Albany then returns home Friday for a 5:00 pm doubleheader against Saugerties.
