Pioneers Add Three from Wofford

ELMIRA, N.Y. — The Elmira Pioneers are excited to announce the signings of middle infielder Brett Rodriguez, third baseman Andrew Orzel, and right-handed pitcher Reece Maniscalco from Wofford College.

Rodriguez, a 6-foot, 200-pound, middle infielder from Queensbury, N.Y., has appeared in 36 games thus far this spring for the Terriers, while hitting .264 with one home run and 11 RBIs. Prior to joining Wofford, Rodriguez was a three-sport standout at Queensbury High School, competing in baseball, football, and basketball. Rodriguez was named first-team All-State in baseball his senior year, as he hit .430 with three home runs and 22 stolen bases. He was named Queensbury High School’s athlete of the year in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Orzel, a third baseman who hails from Newark, Del., stands in at 6-foot-3 and weighs 195 pounds. Thus far this season, Orzel has played in 34 games for the Terriers, while hitting .264 with one home run and driving in 21. While in high school, Orzel hit .485 with 32 hits and 12 stolen bases as a senior to help lead Archmere Academy to the state quarterfinals. For his efforts, Orzel was named conference player of the year, first-team All-State, and a Second-Team Louisville Slugger Collegiate Baseball All-American.

Maniscalco, a 6-foot, 180-pound right-handed pitcher from Fairfield, Conn., has appeared in 15 games for Wofford and currently sports 1-0 record with 13 strikeouts in 15.2 innings. At Fairfield Wade High School, Maniscalco was a three-year letterman and during his senior season was named All-Conference, Conference Player of the Year and All-State. During that season, he posted an 8-1 record with a 1.85 ERA and 78 punch outs in just 53.0 innings.

Commenting on the additions, Manager Brian Hill said, “Rodriquez and Orzel are both very athletic guys who will give us some excellent speed on the bases. We are projecting Brett to see a lot of time in the middle of the infield and bat towards the top of the lineup. Andrew is projected to see a lot of time at third and bat somewhere in the middle. Reece will be an excellent addition to our already strong pitching staff.”
