Geneva Takes Down Elmira, 10-6GENEVA, N.Y. - On Wednesday night in Geneva, McDonough Park played host to a game which saw the Red Wings (20-15) outscore the Pioneers (17-17) 10-2 following the top of the first inning. This led the hosting Geneva ballclub to walk away with their second consecutive victory by a score of 10-6. Down 4-0 going into the bottom of the first, the Wings responded with five straight hits to open the frame and four runs of their own. Mikey Arman (Kenyon), William Simoneit (Cornell), and Matt Smith (UC Davis) all had RBI hits in the inning. In the top of the third, the Pioneers regained the lead with a two out bloop RBI single from Devon Adams (Old Dominion). Geneva answered back in the bottom of the frame with three runs of their own, and they would keep the lead for good at that point. Jake Evans (Alabama Southern CC) singled home a run to tie the game, and Matt Chamberlain (University of New Haven) followed with a two out, two RBI double to push the Red Wings on top, 7-5. In the top of the seventh, a bases loaded walk brought the Pioneers within one of the Red Wings. Geneva added three runs of insurance in the bottom of the eighth, ultimately concluding scoring for the evening. The Pioneers stranded a couple runners in the top of the ninth, and the Wings walked away winners, 10-6. Starter Jordan Murphy (UT Dallas) earned the win, going 5.0 innings and allowing four hits. Reliever Domenic Nardone (Siena) provided 3.0 solid innings of relief, surrendering only a single run and keeping the lead intact in a wet contest. Garrett Swanson (Kalamazoo) closed things out for the ballclub, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Elmira starter Parker Ford (Mississippi State) got slated with the loss on the game, throwing 3.0 innings. Geneva earned, debatably, their biggest two wins of the season in the past two nights. A pair of home wings against Jamestown and Elmira has pushed their lead for second place up to 2.5 games in the East. They return to action on Thursday on the road against the Flames. |
