Pios and Flames Split Saturday Doubleheader

ELMIRA, N.Y. – After taking game one of the doubleheader in walk-off fashion 7-6 over the Onondaga Flames (16-19), the Elmira Pioneers (20-18) dropped the nightcap of the twin bill 8-3 on Saturday evening at Dunn Field.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Onondaga jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning. Kyle Gallagher (Cornell) singled home a run to start the scoring and then an error by the shortstop Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) allowed two more runs to score. An infield single with the bases loaded by Stephen Bennett (Canisius) pushed home run number four.

The Pioneers would get one back in the second inning on a Brett Vosik (Kansas) RBI single.

The Flames would get that run back in the fifth inning when a perfectly executed double steal with runners at the corns resulted in Matt Carey (Ithaca) swiping home.

The Pioneers trimmed the deficit to one in the bottom half of the inning however. Marshall Gilbert (John A. Logan) ripped a two run double and was subsequently scored on a Conor Grammes (Xavier) single to left.

In the sixth inning, an error by the second baseman Andrew Orzel (Wofford) allowed the Flames to tack on an insurance run and push their lead to two.

Down to their final out in the seventh inning, Brayden Combs (Kentucky) lined a single to center that cut the deficit to one. Vosik then followed up Combs with his second RBI single of the day, tying the game. Jonathon Crimmin (Siena) then completed the comeback when he singled to left, scoring pinch runner Anthony Nucerino (UConn) from second to win the game by a final of 7-6.

Matt Bowman (SUNY Broome C.C) gets hung with the loss after blowing the save in the seventh inning and allowing three runs.

Noah Hughes (Miss. State) gets his third win of the season after he pitched a scoreless top of the seventh.

In the second game of the doubleheader, it would be the Pioneers who would jump out to an early lead. Crimmin doubled down the left field line to score Allbry Major (Xavier) to open the scoring and Crimmin was then singled home by Colton Evans (UC-Davis) to cap off the inning.

Onondaga would cut the lead in half in the third inning. With runners at the corners, Sam Little (Ithaca) flew out to left field and on the throw to the plate, the runner from first, Carey, attempted to go to second where he reached safely after Devon Adams (Old Dominion) threw the ball away at the second base bag thus allowing Carson Negrete (Gonzaga) to score from third.

The Flames would then take the lead in the fifth when Trey Baur (Cornell) flared a two run single to center with the bases loaded that gave the Flames the lead and pushed starter Jackson Tedder (Virginia) out of the game.

Elmira was able to tie the score in the sixth on a Major RBI single, but left the go ahead run at third base when Vosik lined out to center to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Flames exploded for five runs to seal their victory. Three of those runs came on a pinch-hit three run triple from Gage Lanning (Canisius) off of Bryce Zaparzynski (Mansfield). Adam Gallagher (Ithaca) then chipped in an RBI single and the five run frame was completed by Alex Canty (Monroe C.C) who notched his second double of the game, this time an RBI double.

Ryan Greco (SUNY Brockport) shut the door in the seventh, preserving the 8-3 victory for Onondaga)

Zaparzynski is dealt the loss after giving up five runs, four earned, in two and two-thirds innings pitched. He struck out three while allowing five hits.

Greco garners the win for the Flames. Greca tossed an inning and a third of scoreless baseball en route to his second victory of the summer.

The Pioneers will be at home again, tomorrow, Sunday, July 16th, at 5:05 to take on the Utica Blue Sox.
