JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Jamestown Jammers overcame a four-run deficit in the ninth inning to force extra innings, but the visiting Elmira Pioneers won a hard-fought 10-inning battle at Diethrick Park, 5-4, on Friday night.
The Pioneers had a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the 9th, but the Jammers bats came alive with 3 outs to go by scoring 4 runs on 4 hits to send the game into extras. In the top of the 10th the Pioneers scored the go ahead run and was able to close it out to win 5-4 in a late game battle.
The Jammers fall to 28-13 as the Elmira Pioneers improve to 22-19.
Starting pitcher for the Pioneers Houston Roth (Ole Miss) was dominant by throwing 4 shutout innings of no-hit ball and striking out 5. Until the 9th the Pioneers bullpen was lights out by throwing 4 innings allowing 0 runs on 3 hits. The Pioneers pitching staff held the Jammers offense in check for 8 innings before the Jammers rallied in the bottom of the 9th by scoring 4 runs to the game up.
In the top of the 1st the Pioneers scored a run and to take the early lead and played excellent defense behind their ace Houston Roth. The Pioneers increased their lead in the top of the 5th by scoring 2 runs on 3 hits with RBI singles by Troy Dixon (Samford) and Conor Grammes (Xavier). The Pioneers led 3-0 after the 5th.
The Pioneers added an insurance run in the top of the 7th to make it 4-0 Pioneers. Elmira was dominating this game and the Jammers only had 3 hits going into the bottom of the 9th. Elmira’s closer, Grammes, came in to shut the door but struggled to find the zone and the Jammers were able to get some timely hitting by scoring 4 runs on 4 hits to tie the game up.
In the top of the 10th the Pioneers scored the go ahead run as Colton Evans (UC Davis) doubled down the left field line to score Andrew Orzel (Wofford) to give the Pioneers the 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the 10th the Jammers went down in order.
