Olmstead Leads Utica to Improbable ComebackUTICA, N.Y. - The Utica Blue Sox scored 10 unanswered runs and overcame a nine-run deficit to defeat the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs on Sunday night at Donovan Stadium. Mohawk Valley jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after three innings of play. The DiamondDawgs would add two more in the top of the sixth thanks to a two run home run by Nico Ramos (Siena) pushing their lead to 9-0. Then the game would take a drastic turn in the bottom of the sixth, when the Blue Sox got on the board by putting up a five spot in the inning, thanks in part to Taylor Olmstead’s (SNHU) first home run of the game. He hit a three-run shot that cut the Mohawk Valley lead down to 9-5. The Taylor Olmstead show would return again in the bottom of the seventh as he ripped a grand slam over the left field fence to complete the comeback and tie the game at 9-9. Olmstead would go 2-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBIs on the day. The Blue Sox would then grab the lead in the bottom of the eighth on Rob Andreoli’s (LIU Post) RBI sacrifice fly. Austin Salnitis (Central Conn. State) came on in the ninth to close out the game and earn the save, thanks in part to an incredible diving catch in center field by Devon Garcia (Ohio) that robbed an extra-base hit with a runner on first. Connor Hurley (Concordia-St. Paul) got the win for Utica, pitching two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth. With the win, Utica improves to 15-26 on the season. With the loss, Mohawk Valley falls to 24-14 on the season and has now lost six straight. |
