Blazers Fall to Onondaga in 2017 Home FinaleBOONVILLE, N.Y. - On a slightly chilly and overcast evening in Boonville, the Adirondack Trail Blazers fell to the Onondaga Flames in their final home game in 2017 by a final score of 9-3. Tyler Schoff (Bryant) made his Adirondack debut and pitched well from the get-go. In the top of the third inning, however, Onondaga was able to strike first as a two-RBI double from Trey Baur (Cornell) gave the Flames an early 2-0 lead. In the home half of the third, the Trail Blazers were out for revenge and evened the score with a sacrifice fly by Jordan Torrento (Adrian) and an RBI single from Riley Schaefer (Texas Lutheran). Four Blazers walked in the half inning. After blanking the Flames in the next two innings, they ran into a little bit of trouble in the top of the sixth. With two runners on base and two outs, Torrento threw just past Zach Zschering (Adrian) at first, allowing Gage Lanning (Canisius) and Matt Carey (Ithaca) to score. Much like the third, the Trail Blazers would score in the same half inning as the Flames did the previous, but were able to put only one run on the board. A dropped fly ball to left field allowed Schaefer to score from third with the RBI accredited to Zschering. Schaefer finished two-for-four with a pair of singles. Down by only one, Adirondack hoped to put the Flames away late in the game, but the Flames would not be extinguished. With a total of five walks, a single and a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the eighth, Onondaga scored thrice and took a 6-3 lead. Chris Hillman and Kyle Nailor (St. Gregory's) saw relief action, but stuggled in their respective appearances. Onondaga did not look back from taking a more decisive lead and tacked on two more in the ninth. Wyatt Myers (Buffalo) hit a sacrifice fly to left field and an RBI single by Carson Negrete (Gonzaga) gave the Flames a 9-3 lead and ultimately the win. Schoff pitched six full innings in his first start, striking out four. He walked only two batters and despite giving up four runs, only two were earned in the loss. Brandon Shirley (Wells) also pitched six full and struck out three. He allowed five walks and all three runs that scored with him on the mound were earned. Shirley earned his first win in his first start this season. Ryan Marketell (Monroe CC) came in for relief for the Flames in the seventh and was credited with the save, his first in 2017. Adirondack will finish out the season on the road, starting with doubleheader on Thursday against the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs. Onondaga returns home Thursday to face off against the Saugerties Stallions. |
