UTICA, N.Y. - On Sunday night the Utica Blue Sox capped off their season with a matchup against their close to home rivals, the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs. The DiamondDawgs' game proved to be too much, as they took a 11-4 win in the Sox’s last game of the season.
The DiamondDawgs were the first to make the board when they took a 1-0 lead at the top of the fourth inning. Clay Koniencki (Monmouth) hit a single that allowed Austin Pollack (Hofstra) to score after stealing third. The DiamondDawgs wouldn’t hold their lead for long as the Blue Sox were able to answer right back at the bottom of the inning. Devon Garcia (Ohio) went up to bat and hit a triple, which got Zane Harris (Wright State) across home plate. Garcia was able to pick up the second run for the Sox off of an error by the second basemen. The Blue Sox left the fourth inning with a 2-1 lead over the Diamond Dawgs.
The Blue Sox did not keep the lead for long as the Dawgs came out strong in the 5th inning. The Dawgs were able to tie the game at the top of the fifth when they scored off of a pitching error. The scoring did not stop there for the Dawgs as they gained nine more runs throughout the inning, which gave them a 11-2 lead.
There were a few spurts of momentum throughout the rest of the game for the Blue Sox. At the bottom of the sixth inning, a double from Cole Pursell (Willamette) put the score at 11-3. Rob Andreoli (LIU Post) hit a homerun at the bottom of the seventh inning, adding a fourth run to the Sox tally. Andreoli’s home run ended the scoring for the night and the Dawgs took the 11-4 win.
The DiamondDawgs added another win to their record before they finish off the regular season, when they take on the Albany Dutchmen tomorrow night at home. With the loss, the Blue Sox finish their season with a 18-30 record.
