Dragons Fall to Dutchmen at East Field

Glens Falls, NY-Northway rivals Glens Falls and Albany entered Monday night's PGCBL game at East Field with a combined 3-0 record. Something had to give. as Tom Taplin (Georgetown College) for the Dragons and James Rubino (Hudson Valley CC) for the Dutchmen squared off on the bump.

Albany got out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Despite the fact that Taplin struck three in the frame the Dutchmen parlayed a hit batter, a single, an error and a three-run homer by Ubaldo Lopez (Dartmouth) into a four run cushion.

Glens Falls got on the  board in the bottom of the fourth when Phoenix Hernandez (Southern New Hampshire) who just joined the Dragons made his presence felt when he took Rubino deep, blasting a home run off of the left field light pole on his second at bat of season to make cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Dragons pulled within two in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Arndt (Cornell) smacked one-out double off of Rubino, and came around to score on a pair of Dutchmen passed balls.

Rubino ended up going six innings for the Dutchmen, giving up just four hits and two earned runs while striking out five and walking five before giving way to Dyaln D'Anna (Siena).

Taplin settled in well after the first, not giving up another run in six innings, yielding only three hits, striking out seven and walking one.

Albany tacked on a run in the top of the eighth off of Glens Falls reliever Michael Nunez (USC-Lancaster). Cameron Colette (Marshall) walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Collette was driven in by a Cameron Masterson (Louisville) single to make it 5-2.

Glens Falls drew closer in the bottom of the eighth when Dan Ryan (Fairfield) reached on an error and scored on a Zach Fritz (LIU-Post) RBI single to make it 5-3.

D'Anna closed it out from there retiring the Dragons in order in the ninth to earn the save and preserve the Albany victory.

Rubino (1-0) was the winning pitcher. Taplin (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

Albany advances their mark to 2-0. Glens Falls drops to 2-1.

Glens Falls hits the road to Shuttleworth Park to face the Amsterdam Mohawks Wednesday night.
